Malaysia’s Strategic Move to Promote Palestinian Rights

Malaysia’s decision to extend an invitation to former United States President Donald Trump for the upcoming Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur is a calculated step aimed at advancing the cause of Palestinian rights through diplomatic channels. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized this during a recent speech, highlighting the importance of engaging with global powers to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Anwar addressed criticisms surrounding the invitation, stating that dialogue with influential nations is essential for driving change. “In the name of Asean, we want to invite Donald Trump. What’s wrong with negotiating? I am not surrendering, I want to negotiate,” he said at the “Himpunan Solidariti Bersama Gaza” rally held at the Axiata Arena. His words were met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The prime minister expressed hope that his meeting with Trump during the summit would contribute to the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. He reiterated that Malaysia will continue to use the diplomatic platform to support the Palestinian struggle while upholding a firm and principled stance on the issue.

Anwar drew historical parallels to emphasize the significance of diplomatic engagement. He referenced Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, who traveled to London to negotiate independence from British colonial rule. “When Tunku Abdul Rahman wanted independence, he and his delegation went to London to meet the British — the colonisers of our country, who oppressed our people, exploited our wealth, exiled our rulers, and demeaned Islam in our land. Yet diplomatic negotiations were important because the goal was independence.”

He also pointed to Vietnam as another example, where leaders engaged in peace talks despite being colonized by France and the United States. “Vietnam, which was once colonised by France and America, went to Paris to negotiate peace. My colleagues and I want peace. Stop killing the children in Gaza, stop hurting their women, give them their rights and their freedom,” Anwar said.

The Asean Summit: A Platform for Global Dialogue

The Asean–US Summit and the East Asia Summit, both scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28, will be the largest gatherings in the bloc’s history since its formation in 1976. These events are expected to bring together a diverse group of world leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In addition to Trump and Putin, leaders from various regions such as Asia, Europe, Canada, Africa, and Latin America are anticipated to attend. This convergence of global figures underscores the significance of the Asean Summit as a platform for fostering international cooperation and addressing pressing global issues.

Key Points of Discussion

During the summit, several critical topics are expected to be discussed, including:

  • Regional security: Ensuring stability and peace in Southeast Asia amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
  • Economic collaboration: Strengthening trade and investment ties between Asean nations and global partners.
  • Climate change: Addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.
  • Human rights: Advocating for the protection of human rights and the promotion of democratic values.

Anwar’s approach reflects a broader strategy of leveraging multilateral forums to advance Malaysia’s interests and contribute to global peace and justice. By engaging with key international players, the Malaysian government aims to create a more inclusive and equitable world order.

Conclusion

The inclusion of former U.S. President Donald Trump in the Asean Summit highlights Malaysia’s commitment to using diplomacy as a tool for achieving positive change. As the world watches closely, the summit offers an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and collaboration on issues that affect the region and beyond.
