Escalating Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan
Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, has raised concerns about the deteriorating relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He warned that the current situation could lead to further strain in bilateral ties, a scenario that Pakistan is keen to avoid. During an interview with a private television news channel, Asif highlighted that relations with Afghanistan have never been ideal, pointing out that terrorism is being exported from Afghan soil into Pakistan.
Asif emphasized that Pakistan desires respectful and dignified relations with its neighbor, akin to those of good neighbors. He urged Afghanistan to cooperate in addressing cross-border terrorism. The tensions between Islamabad and Kabul are increasing, especially as the interim government in Afghanistan shows reluctance to take action against terrorist groups operating from its territory. This comes amid a rise in terror attacks within Pakistan.
Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, there has been a noticeable surge in cross-border terror incidents, particularly in the border provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan. The two countries share a porous border that spans approximately 2,500 kilometers, with several crossing points that play a crucial role in regional trade and people-to-people relations.
However, the issue of terrorism remains a significant concern for Pakistan. The country has repeatedly called on Afghanistan to prevent its territory from being used by groups like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to launch attacks within Pakistan. These concerns have been echoed in a report submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team. The report highlights a connection between Kabul and the TTP, suggesting that the former provides logistical, operational, and financial support to the latter.
During the interview, Asif mentioned that people living in areas where terrorists find refuge are usually aware of their presence. He remarked, “If someone from outside enters a neighborhood, I would surely know within three days.” He added that silence from locals in such cases amounts to partial consent. Asif also asserted that no harm would be allowed to come to patriotic Pakistanis.
Pakistan’s Role in Hosting Afghans
Pakistan has hosted Afghans for over four decades, starting from the Soviet invasion through the Taliban takeover in 2021. Some refugees were born and raised in Pakistan, while others are still waiting for third-country relocation. According to media reports, following a 2023 crackdown on undocumented Afghans and those exceeding legal status, more than 554,000 Afghans have been returned since April 2025 under Pakistan’s Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan. This includes around 145,000 in August alone.
Security sources claim that masterminds and facilitators of terrorism are based in Afghanistan and are being supported by India. Speaking about India, the defense minister said New Delhi’s recent statements indicated it might attempt another misadventure. He warned that India was trying to restore its lost pride after suffering humiliation and stated that Pakistan would respond more forcefully than before. “The misconception or delusion India had has already been dispelled,” he added.

While Pakistan seeks to maintain stable relations with its neighbor, it remains vigilant against threats posed by terrorist groups.
