Hostage Release Begins as Truce Takes Shape

The release of Israeli hostages is set to begin on Monday morning, according to senior Hamas officials. This development comes after the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) completed their partial withdrawal from Gaza on Friday. The move marks the start of a 72-hour countdown for the return of all 48 Israeli hostages, including 20 who are believed to still be alive. This follows an agreement under Donald Trump’s peace plan.

Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official, confirmed to AFP that the prisoner exchange would commence as agreed. He stated, “According to the signed agreement, the prisoner exchange is set to begin on Monday morning as agreed, and there are no new developments on this matter.”

Under the terms of the deal, Hamas plans to release all remaining hostages in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. At the same time, the Israeli military will begin its withdrawal from the majority of Gaza.

Earlier in the week, Hamas had indicated it was still searching for some of the slain hostages held in the Strip. A taskforce was then established to locate the deceased missing hostages, with representatives from Israel, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar involved, according to an official speaking to the Daily Mail.

Trump’s Role in the Peace Deal

On Wednesday night, former U.S. President Donald Trump praised the international cooperation that led to the landmark deal between Israel and Hamas. Speaking to American TV presenter Sean Hannity during a telephone interview, he said, “This is more than Gaza. This is peace in the Middle East.”

Trump described the situation as a “great day for the world” and envisioned a prosperous future for the war-torn area. He emphasized the global collaboration, stating, “The whole world has come together on this one, Israel, every country has come together. This has been a fantastic day. This is a great day for the world. This is a wonderful day, a wonderful day for everybody.”

The U.S. President is expected to deliver a historic speech at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, in Jerusalem on Monday. He will meet with those freed before traveling to Egypt for a summit on Gaza with world leaders.

A Step Toward Ending the Conflict

The latest truce represents a significant step toward ending a devastating two-year conflict that began with Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack saw Hamas-led militants storm into Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

As the situation continues to evolve, many are watching closely to see if this truce can lead to lasting peace in the region. The exchange of hostages for prisoners has been a central part of the negotiations, with hopes that it will pave the way for a historic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
