Oscar Piastri Addresses McLaren’s Team Dynamics and 2025 Title Fight
Oscar Piastri has made it clear that he does not believe McLaren is favoring his teammate Lando Norris in their 2025 Formula 1 title race. He also emphasizes that he does not expect any special treatment or priority as the current championship leader.
Piastri is currently leading the standings by 22 points over Norris, while reigning champion Max Verstappen trails by 63 points after a consistent performance over the last few races. Verstappen managed to gain ground following victories in Italy and Azerbaijan, and even secured second place in Singapore behind George Russell, further closing the gap on the pair.
The incident in Singapore, where Norris overtook Piastri at Turn 3, led to contact between the two drivers. This move was initiated by Norris tapping the rear wheel of Verstappen, which resulted in some tension within the team. Although Piastri was not significantly damaged, the collision raised concerns about team dynamics and internal communication.
Despite the controversy, McLaren has since reviewed the incident, with Norris accepting responsibility for causing the contact. However, Piastri maintains that the team’s decision to let Norris keep his position during the race does not indicate any favoritism towards him.
“I’m very happy with that,” Piastri said ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin. “We analyzed the incident, and there has been responsibility placed on Lando. But I’m very happy that there’s no favoritism or bias.”
The team had productive discussions following the event, and both Piastri and Norris have acknowledged the need to maintain fair competition. The incident in Singapore did not align with the team’s expectations, and Norris has taken full responsibility for his actions.
“Ultimately, I don’t think you can really say what would have been fair to do in the race,” Piastri added. “I wouldn’t expect it to be redressed on track every time. But we know how we’re expected to go racing, and if we don’t, there are consequences.”
McLaren’s decision to hold Norris accountable for the clash marks a shift from its initial response during the heat of the race. Piastri acknowledges that analyzing such situations in real-time is challenging, but the post-race discussions provided clarity and helped reinforce the team’s values.
“I don’t think what happened was purposeful. It was just a slight misjudgment,” Piastri said. “I’m not going to change anything in how I go racing.”
Despite the potential for a Verstappen comeback, Piastri remains confident in the fairness of the competition between him and Norris. He believes that both drivers should continue fighting for the championship without any special treatment.
“I don’t think so, no. Every driver wants a fair chance to try and win a championship,” he explained. “For me, it’s more than fair to let us both keep fighting for that. So, no, I don’t think that’s the approach we should take.”
As the final six-race stretch approaches, Piastri remains focused on the challenge ahead. He is confident that the team will continue to support both drivers equally, ensuring a fair and competitive battle for the 2025 title.
