Sam Fender Claims Mercury Prize 2025 with Album People Watching

Sam Fender has made history by winning this year’s Mercury Prize for his album People Watching. The 31-year-old singer, who hails from Newcastle, accepted the prestigious award at a ceremony held in his hometown on Thursday. This marked the first time the event took place outside of London, making it a significant milestone for the music industry.

The Mercury Prize is an annual accolade given to the best album released by a musical act from the UK or Ireland. Established in 1992, it was created as an alternative to the BRIT Awards. The winner receives a cash prize of £25,000, which adds to the prestige of the award.

Fender’s win came as a surprise, as Irish singer CMAT was considered the favorite leading up to the event. In his acceptance speech, Fender expressed his disbelief and gratitude. He said: “I just didn’t think that was going to happen at all. I want to say thank you – I cannot think.”

Afterward, he grabbed his guitar and performed the title track from People Watching, showcasing the emotional depth of his work. Backstage, he shared with the BBC: “I didn’t think that was going to happen at all. I’ve just spent the last 10 minutes crying.”

Winning in his native Newcastle was particularly meaningful for Fender. He highlighted the importance of the event for the local music scene, which he described as being in an “isolated bubble.” Fender emphasized that the recognition brought a sense of pride and validation to the community.

The judges praised People Watching for its “character and ambition,” calling it a “classic” album. Their decision reflected the album’s impact and artistic value.

A close friend of Fender confirmed the relationship, stating: “Sam is very much in love with Rosa and they have been secretly dating since 2022. They dated loosely for a few months and then things became way more serious in 2023. They’ve travelled quite a bit together and recently they went on a romantic holiday to the Maldives.”

Rosa has become a constant presence in Fender’s life, supporting him on tour and cheering from the front row at his concerts. She is well-acquainted with his family and band members, further solidifying their bond.
