A New Vision for a California Megacity
A group of wealthy individuals has decided to abandon their initial plan to construct a new city from scratch in California and has instead introduced an alternative approach. The real estate consortium, known as California Forever, had initially aimed to create a brand-new metropolis in Solano County. They started acquiring land under a pseudonym in 2023, which raised concerns among local residents.
As the controversy grew, the group has now changed its strategy and announced that the project will proceed as an annexation of an existing city. According to California Forever CEO Jan Sramek, the development will be an offshoot of nearby Suisan City, a small community with around 30,000 residents.
Sramek unveiled a 40-year master plan to build the city on a new site northeast of San Francisco. The project has attracted high-profile supporters, including LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, tech entrepreneur Marc Andreesen, and Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs and a philanthropist.
The latest plans involve expanding Suisan City by 22,873 acres, including a 5,700-acre security buffer zone near Travis Air Force Base. This information was reported by Realtor.com.
The consortium has praised the new plans for the megacity, designating at least 20 percent of the area for parks, trails, ecological habitats, and community gardens. However, the city’s proximity to Travis Air Force Base has caused some local concerns, with fears that the quiet purchase of land might be linked to foreign interests, similar to recent cases of Chinese government buying American farmland.
Sramek explained that the land was purchased covertly to prevent speculators from inflating land prices in the area. Military leaders at the air force base have approved the latest plans, stating that construction would not interfere with military operations.
Sramek has described the proposed city as “the most walkable community in America,” featuring an entertainment district, a new shipyard, and a tech-focused hub. He mentioned that the design will incorporate New York-style street grids, along with elements inspired by Barcelona and Tokyo, making the city easy to navigate.
“Like California’s fusion cuisine, we drew inspiration from the best designs from across the world to create something delightful,” he said in a post on X.
He also emphasized that the city will be more affordable for many residents and will utilize “a small parcel fabric where lots of people co-create a real city.”
“We’re prioritizing homeownership and family-sized units,” wrote Sramek. “We’ve designed for missing middle housing types where families can purchase homes.”
California Forever previously released renderings of the proposed city, showcasing a variety of townhouses and gardens in the sun-drenched area. Sramek noted that the renderings are not meant to depict exact home designs but rather to illustrate the overall layout of the city.
“The renderings are illustrative, and a pattern book is coming later,” he said, according to Realtor.com. “As with urban design, our goal is to combine the best of the old and the new, so stay tuned.”
