Amelle Berrabah, a former member of the iconic British girl group Sugababes, has hinted that some long-kept secrets will be revealed in an upcoming BBC documentary titled Girlbands Forever. At 41 years old, Amelle joined the band in 2005 after Mutya Buena left and remained with the group until they went on hiatus in 2011. During her time in the band, she worked alongside Heidi Range and Jade Ewen, contributing to their seventh album, Sweet 7, before the group disbanded.
Despite the split, there seems to be no lingering animosity among the members. However, a legal battle in 2019 by the original line-up—Mutya, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhán Donaghy—over the rights to the Sugababes name made it impossible for Amelle and her fellow members to reunite under the same banner.
In a 2019 interview with Fubar Radio, Berrabah reflected on the difficult circumstances surrounding the 2011 split. She mentioned that things didn’t end on the best of terms and expressed regret that Jade Ewen, who joined the group in 2009, didn’t get to experience a longer tenure with the band.
Now, with the release of the BBC documentary, fans are eagerly anticipating more insights into the behind-the-scenes drama and triumphs of the Sugababes. In an Instagram post promoting the show, Berrabah shared her excitement about the project, saying: “Had such a wonderful time chatting all things girlbands for the BBC show ‘Girlbands Forever’. It brought back so many amazing memories — from my time in the Sugababes to the incredible era of pop that shaped so many of us.”
The Legal Battle and the Band’s Legacy
As the last remaining original member, Keisha Buchanan has spoken about her departure from the band in 2009, claiming she was forced out by management and replaced by Jade Ewen. She recounted being told that some members felt bullied, even though she had just given one of them a foot massage the day before. This situation took her years to process through therapy, and she admitted that it influenced her reluctance to reunite with her former bandmates.
Despite these challenges, the Sugababes have managed to make a successful comeback. Their April 2025 performance was praised by Rob Oliver, who gave the show a four-and-a-half star review. He noted that the group, despite being well beyond their peak, delivered a powerful set that showcased their legendary status as one of Britain’s greatest girl groups.
Mental Health Struggles and Reunions
Mental health issues have played a significant role in the band’s history. Mutya recently opened up about her struggles with postnatal depression, which contributed to her initial departure from the group. Similarly, Heidi Range left the band in 2001 due to depression and feelings of isolation.
However, these hardships ultimately brought the members closer together. Keisha described the emotional journey of the group, saying, “Being able to go through those trenches, to constantly be told no, constantly told who we should be, to have those frustrations… we had every reason to give up, but then God was like, ‘It’s your time.’”
The Sugababes’ latest tour has been a massive success, and they are now planning to release a new studio album.
