Arne Slot Reflects on Liverpool’s Disappointing Performance Against Brentford
Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, has openly admitted that the team’s recent loss to Brentford was one of the worst performances during his tenure. He expressed frustration over not being able to find a solution to counter direct teams, which proved to be a significant challenge in the match.
In contrast, Keith Andrews, the manager of Brentford, celebrated what he described as the best night of his managerial career. Goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago helped Brentford secure a memorable victory, despite strong efforts from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool’s current streak of four consecutive league losses marks one of the most challenging periods for Slot since taking charge. The Dutch manager emphasized that the performance against Brentford fell far short of the standards set by the team when they won the Premier League title last season.
When asked if this was the worst performance of his time at Liverpool, Slot responded: “Yeah. I think it is up there, yeah. In my time here. In terms of losing a game. Normally when we are 1-0 or 2-0 down, by the way after we went 1-0 down that was the only moment I really liked.”
He continued: “After 30 minutes they took the game again with long throws and set-pieces and other moments where they were really good. They did many things well. It is disappointing again. We hoped if we won a game during the week, of course you hope for a better result. I was also hoping and expecting a better performance. This was far from what we are used to. Even if we are losing, our performances have been better than tonight.”

Slot also pointed out that the team failed to execute the basics correctly. “If you are 1-0, 2-0 or 3-1 down, the energy in the stadium was helpful for them. They are a good team in winning duels and second balls, you must give them credit.”
This was the second consecutive weekend where Liverpool faced challenges from long balls, and Slot acknowledged that teams have developed a specific playing style against them. “Teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play against us. And we have not found an answer yet. Going 1-0 down after five minutes does not help. Teams know which strategy to play against us.”
Keith Andrews Expresses Pride in Brentford’s Victory
On the other hand, Andrews was thrilled with the result and highlighted the importance of key attributes such as fearlessness, structure, desire, resilience, character, and how the team reacted to situations. “Fearlessness was one of the words I used in the build-up to the game, it takes a lot more than that really – structure, desire, resilience, character, how you react to situations. If you have a setback, you step forward not step back.”
He added: “We’ve just beaten the Premier League champions. It ranks pretty highly (in his achievements)! There was a lot made about their form coming into it but if you strip it back they are world-class players. It is a big result for the football club, especially a big result for the nature of our next chapter.”
Looking Ahead
As Liverpool continues to navigate through a difficult period, fans and analysts alike are closely watching how Slot will address the team’s issues. Questions remain about the team’s mentality and energy in recent defeats, as well as whether the manager’s frustrations with defensive inconsistencies are justified.
With Slot at the helm, the focus is on how the team can adapt and overcome the challenges posed by different playing styles. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining whether Liverpool can regain their form and return to the top of the Premier League table.
