Australia has once again proven their dominance in the Women’s Cricket World Cup, securing a crucial victory against South Africa. Alana King delivered what is now considered the greatest spell in World Cup history, taking seven wickets to lead her team to a commanding win. “I wouldn’t say a lot has changed with my bowling. If anything, I have just tried to become more consistent with my stock ball and trust that. While King’s performances against Bangladesh and England were impressive, her display against South Africa was on another level. She started strong, taking 4-0 from her first 2.3 overs, including the crucial wicket of Marizanne Kapp. Sune Luis was caught sweeping, Annerie Dercksen was bowled, and Chloe Tryon was dismissed at mid-wicket, as South Africa struggled to handle King’s spin.
She took her fifth wicket when she bowled Sinalo Jafta, followed by Masabata Klass. Her final wicket came when she knocked over Nadine de Klerk with a ball that pitched on leg stump and took the top of off.
Australia faced early setbacks in their chase, with Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry falling cheaply. However, the chase was never really in doubt, with Georgia Voll scoring an unbeaten 38 while filling in for injured captain Alyssa Healy. Beth Mooney also contributed with 42 runs.
Healy is currently training on her strained calf and pushing to return for Thursday’s semi-final. The win came after a difficult week for the team, as Cricket Australia confirmed on Saturday that two players had allegedly been stalked and inappropriately touched by a man on Thursday. The incident was reported to police, and local media reported that a man has since been arrested.
