Manchester United supporters are feeling anxious about the health of Matheus Cunha after a ‘training accident’ stopped him from participating in the local Christmas lights event. The Red Devils aim to maintain their unbeaten streak of six games when they host Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night.
However, manager Ruben Amorim is dealing with several injury concerns, including defender Harry Maguire and striker Benjamin Sesko, who have been ruled out. As a result, Cunha was expected to start as the top forward, but this may no longer be the case following an unexpected update on Saturday evening.
The Brazilian international, who joined Manchester United from Wolves last summer, was scheduled to switch on the Altrincham Christmas lights on Saturday. However, just hours before the event, it was announced that he would not be attending due to medical reasons.
A statement from the Visit Altrincham Facebook page said:
“Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.”The event will still feature other performances, including Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy and Sam Aston, the winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, who plays Chesney in Coronation Street.

This news has raised concerns among Manchester United fans regarding Cunha’s condition, especially considering his significance to the team. Although he has only scored one goal since his £62.5 million move to Manchester, the 26-year-old plays a crucial role in Amorim’s strategy, helping to maximize the performance of his teammate Bryan Mbeumo.
The club has not yet released an official statement on the issue, although BBC Sport reports that Cunha’s appearance in Altrincham was not arranged by the club. If both Cunha and Sesko are unable to play, Amorim will face a significant selection challenge, as there are no natural, senior centre-forwards available.
Mason Mount has previously played as a false-nine, while young player Chido Obi Martin and underused Joshua Zirkzee are also options in that position.
