Political Allegations Surrounding Viral School Videos in Delta State

Recent viral videos showing pupils sitting on the floor in some schools across Delta State have sparked widespread concern and debate. The Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Samuel Mareire, has claimed that these videos were politically motivated, alleging that they were sponsored by opponents of the state government to tarnish its image.

The videos, which gained traction on social media, depicted students in classrooms with broken furniture and deteriorating infrastructure. These images led to public outrage, with many questioning the state’s commitment to education and infrastructure development. However, Mareire dismissed the content as a deliberate attempt to undermine the government’s efforts in the education sector.

Addressing the Claims

Speaking during a press conference in Asaba, Mareire acknowledged the existence of the video but emphasized that it was not an issue the board would typically address. He described the situation as “more of a political issue,” yet he felt compelled to respond to set the record straight.

“The attention of the board has been drawn to a trending video on social media where some pupils were seen sitting on the floor at Eghreka Primary School, Ewu, in Ughelli South Local Government Area,” he said. “Ordinarily, we would not have responded because it is more of a political issue. But to set the record straight, we must clarify the true situation and highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to improve education and infrastructure in Delta State.”

Mareire went on to explain that the damaged furniture was not due to negligence but rather the result of activities such as sports events and burial ceremonies held on school premises. He also pointed out that the state government had invested heavily in improving educational facilities.

Investments in Education Infrastructure

According to Mareire, the SUBEB alone has constructed and distributed over 16,000 dual desks to schools across Delta State this year. This effort is complemented by contributions from other ministries, including the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education, as well as initiatives led by state lawmakers and corporate organizations.

In terms of infrastructure, the chairman revealed that 234 new classrooms have been built. Out of these, 162 were funded through the 2024 UBE Intervention Fund, while 72 were constructed by the Delta State Government. Additionally, 24 more classrooms are currently under construction.

These interventions, Mareire explained, have helped reduce overcrowding and create safer, more conducive learning environments for students in both rural and urban areas.

Future Plans for School Safety

Looking ahead, the state government plans to begin the demolition of dilapidated and unused classroom structures. This move is aimed at preventing potential collapses and ensuring the safety of students. Mareire emphasized that such actions are necessary to maintain the integrity of school buildings and protect the welfare of pupils.

Conclusion

While the viral videos raised concerns about the state of education infrastructure in Delta State, the official response highlights the government’s efforts to address these challenges. By investing in new facilities and repairing existing ones, the administration aims to provide students with better learning conditions. However, the allegations of political motivation underscore the complex interplay between governance, public perception, and media influence in the region.
