The concept of the “Iyaloloja-General” is a contentious one, especially when compared to other traditional titles that have more organic roots in Nigerian culture. One such title is the “Eze of Lagos,” which is often dismissed as a self-proclaimed position without any official recognition or power. This is where the issue of false equivalence comes into play—comparing two different positions that have entirely different levels of influence and legitimacy.

The Eze of Lagos, for example, has no salary, no official status, and no real subjects beyond those who may recognize him at social events. In contrast, the Iyaloloja-General, who is the daughter of the President, wields significant political power. She can write official letters, gain access to royal palaces, and even impose her own candidates on local communities. This kind of power dynamic is not something that the Eze of Lagos can replicate, highlighting the stark difference between these two roles.

A Disgraceful Corruption of Tradition

The “Iyaloloja-General” title was originally meant to honor women who had made significant contributions to their communities through business and trade. These women were respected for their achievements and their ability to lift others up. However, this tradition has been corrupted by figures like Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, who has taken advantage of her father’s political power to claim a title that she does not deserve.

Tinubu-Ojo’s actions are particularly problematic because she has expanded the scope of her title beyond Lagos, now attempting to impose Yoruba traditions on other ethnic groups. This is a clear example of cultural imperialism, where one group tries to enforce its customs on another. Her actions threaten to erode the very meaning of the “iyaloja” title, reducing it to an empty symbol of political favor rather than a genuine recognition of merit.

The Role of Traditional Leaders

Traditional leaders have also played a role in the misuse of the “iyaloja” title. Many of them have sought to please Tinubu-Ojo’s father, knowing that his political influence can determine their future. This has led to situations where the title is given to individuals who have no real connection to the market or the community they are supposed to represent.

For instance, during a visit to the Oba of Benin’s palace, the Osaro Idah pointed out that the “iyaloja” title is unknown in Edo culture. He explained that the Edo people have their own equivalent, called the “iyeki,” which is specific to each market and cannot be imposed from outside. This highlights the importance of respecting cultural boundaries and ensuring that traditional roles are not co-opted for political purposes.

The Consequences of Centralization

The centralization of power through the “iyaloja-general” title has further exacerbated the problem. Instead of allowing local communities to choose their own representatives, this title has created a top-down system where decisions are made by those in power. This undermines the democratic principles that once governed these roles and leaves local market women without a voice.

In addition, the title has become associated with individuals who lack the necessary experience or qualifications to hold such a position. For example, Josephine Ibhaguezejele, who was introduced as the head of market women in Edo State, is described more as a pastor than as a market woman. This shift in focus shows how the title is losing its connection to the very community it is meant to serve.

A Political Dynasty in the Making

Folasade Tinubu-Ojo’s actions are not just about personal ambition; they are part of a larger strategy to build a political dynasty. Her father, the President, has long advocated for decentralization, yet his administration is now promoting a centralized agenda that benefits his family. This contradiction is evident in how Tinubu-Ojo is able to act with impunity, knowing that her father will not stop her.

Moreover, the fact that Tinubu-Ojo is one of several children in a polygamous family adds another layer of complexity. Other members of the family, including her mother and siblings, are also vying for influence, creating a competitive environment where political power is passed down through generations.

The Future of the “Iyaloloja” Title

If the current trend continues, the “iyaloja” title may soon lose all its meaning. It could either be reformed to reflect its original purpose or become a symbol of corruption and political manipulation. Either way, the damage has already been done, and the title is no longer what it once was.

As we move forward, it is essential to remember the values that once defined the “iyaloja” role—merit, independence, and community service. Without these, the title risks becoming nothing more than a tool for political gain, and the traditions it represents may eventually fade into history.
