Sir Jim Ratcliffe Stands by Ruben Amorim Despite Criticism

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has once again shown his support for Ruben Amorim, the club’s current manager, despite growing discontent among fans and media. A significant portion of the fanbase has been calling for Amorim’s dismissal, but Ratcliffe has made it clear that the Portuguese coach is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Amorim was appointed as the successor to Erik ten Hag last year, but he has struggled to win over the fans and critics alike. The team finished in 15th place in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, marking one of the worst seasons in the club’s history. Since then, Amorim has not managed to secure back-to-back Premier League victories, which has only added to the pressure on him.

Despite the criticism surrounding his preferred 3-4-3 formation, Amorim remains committed to his tactics, insisting that the system is not the issue. His approach has come under intense scrutiny, especially after a recent low point when Manchester United were eliminated by Grimsby Town, a League One side, in the FA Cup.

Ratcliffe, the controlling co-owner of the club, has publicly defended Amorim, stating that the manager needs at least three years to prove himself as a “great” coach. In an interview with BBC Sport, he emphasized that success cannot be achieved overnight and criticized the press for expecting immediate results.

“The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow. You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”

Ratcliffe, known for his business ventures including sponsoring Eliud Kipchoge’s record-breaking 1:59 run, has also highlighted the need for patience and long-term planning in managing a club of Manchester United’s stature.

Amorim’s Recent Performance and Future Challenges

Despite the challenges, there have been signs of improvement. After a recent international break, Amorim led the team to their most comfortable result of the season, a 2-0 victory over Sunderland. This win provided a brief respite from the mounting pressure, but the real test lies ahead.

Amorim will soon face Liverpool at Anfield, a match that could determine whether he can secure back-to-back league wins. Fans are hoping for a turnaround, but the pressure on the manager remains high.

Zinedine Zidane and the Possibility of a Managerial Change

Even with Ratcliffe’s backing, Amorim’s performance continues to draw attention, with many speculating about a potential exit. One name frequently mentioned is Zinedine Zidane, the former Real Madrid manager who has been without a job since 2021.

Zidane is reportedly interested in the role but has set two conditions before considering any move to the Premier League. These demands have sparked further debate about the future direction of the club and the type of leadership it may require.

As the season progresses, the spotlight on Amorim will only intensify. Whether he can turn things around and earn the trust of the fans and the board remains to be seen. For now, Ratcliffe’s support offers him some breathing room, but the clock is ticking.
