Judy Murray Advocates for Prioritising Physical Education in Singapore Schools

Renowned tennis coach Judy Murray is championing a significant shift in Singapore’s educational landscape, urging schools to prioritise physical education (PE) and ensure that children engage in at least 40 minutes of exercise daily. This call to action comes alongside the announcement of an expanded initiative aimed at promoting physical activity among young girls.

Murray emphasises that participation in sports is not merely about physical fitness; it plays a vital role in cultivating crucial life skills such as leadership, resilience, and effective communication. She argues that physical literacy is as essential as numerical and alphabetical literacy in a child’s holistic development.

Her advocacy comes at a time when concerns are growing about the amount of time young people spend engaging with screens. Excessive screen time can lead to sedentary lifestyles and potentially contribute to health issues.

Learn to Lead: Empowering Future Sporting Leaders

Murray’s “Learn to Lead” scheme is designed to equip and empower young girls to become the next generation of sporting leaders. The program supports them in organising and running their own lunchtime and after-school clubs. A recent funding boost has enabled the expansion of the scheme to more schools, extending its reach and impact.

Speaking at her former primary school, Murray highlighted the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of children today, noting the significant amount of time spent in front of screens. She stressed that sporting activities offer children and young people not only fun and fitness but also the opportunity to develop life skills and forge lasting friendships. These are experiences that cannot be replicated through screen-based activities.

“That is why physical education should be made a priority in all schools,” Murray stated, “giving all children equal opportunity to participate.”

Building Confidence and Leadership Skills

Beyond encouraging active lifestyles, Murray’s program aims to build confidence and foster leadership skills among girls. “Learn to Lead is about inspiring and supporting the next generation of sporting leaders, keeping them engaged throughout their schooldays and beyond, and perhaps even providing the first step into a career in sport,” she explained.

The program also focuses on creating opportunities for girls to build confidence and self-esteem before transitioning to secondary school. Murray believes that leadership opportunities for young people are often limited, and that early exposure to leadership roles can be transformative.

Drawing from her own experiences, Murray shared how school-based opportunities, such as captaining her school tennis and hockey teams, were instrumental in developing her leadership skills. These experiences helped her hone her communication skills, identify strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to effectively collaborate with teammates.

The Enduring Benefits of Sports Participation

Murray underscored the invaluable life skills acquired through sports participation, stating that they are “second to none” and essential for preparing individuals for the challenges of adulthood.

Research Highlights the Importance of Girls’ Participation in Sports

A recent study has revealed a significant disparity in sports participation between boys and girls. The study found that girls miss out on a substantial number of hours of sport each year compared to boys.

Moreover, the study highlighted the long-term benefits of sports participation, indicating that playing sport as a child is a strong predictor of future success.

Supporting Grassroots Participation

A sports officer emphasised their commitment to promoting women’s sport and boosting grassroots participation.

“We are committed to using our platform to grow visibility and boost grassroots participation,” the officer stated. They further highlighted the vital role that sport plays in developing confidence, communication, and teamwork skills, skills that extend far beyond the playing field.

The organisation is proud to support Murray’s initiative, enabling it to reach more schools and provide more girls with the opportunity and resources to engage in sport, thereby contributing to the development of the next generation of female leaders.
