Sophisticated Tunnel Leads to Mass Illegal Border Crossing into Poland

Polish Border Guard authorities have reported a significant breach of the Polish-Belarusian border, involving over 180 foreigners who entered Polish territory via a meticulously dug tunnel. The clandestine passage was discovered near Narewka in the Podlasie region, burrowed beneath a dam. This sophisticated operation highlights the evolving tactics employed by individuals seeking to circumvent border controls.

The timely detection of this illegal entry was facilitated by the Border Guard’s advanced integrated electronic surveillance systems. Upon emerging from the tunnel, the migrants were quickly located. A swift response saw more than 130 individuals apprehended, with ongoing efforts to locate the remaining fugitives.

A Tunnel of Significant Scale and Secrecy

The discovered tunnel is a testament to the considerable effort and planning involved. Measuring nearly a hundred metres in length and approximately 1.5 metres in height, it provided a substantial underground route. Intelligence suggests the entrance was strategically concealed within a forest on the Belarusian side, situated around 50 metres from the border. The exit, on the other hand, was remarkably close to the Polish frontier, a mere 10 metres away, underscoring the precision of its construction.

The operation to apprehend the migrants was a multi-agency effort. Border guards were supported by soldiers, police officers, and specialised tracking dogs. This coordinated approach was instrumental in the rapid apprehension of the majority of the group. The apprehended individuals primarily consisted of nationals from Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the group also included residents from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, indicating a diverse mix of nationalities involved in this illegal crossing.

Suspected Smuggling Ring Dismantled

In conjunction with the migrant apprehensions, Polish authorities detained two individuals suspected of facilitating the illegal passage. A 69-year-old Polish national and a 49-year-old Lithuanian were arrested. They are currently under investigation for their alleged roles in smuggling the migrants towards western Europe. Further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of this suspected smuggling operation.

A Pattern of Tunnel Discoveries in the Region

This recent discovery is not an isolated incident. It marks the fourth such tunnel uncovered this year by officers of the Podlaskie Branch of the Border Guard. The repeated discovery of these underground passages points to a persistent and organised method of illegal border infiltration in the region.

The Border Guard has underscored the effectiveness of their security measures in responding to such sophisticated breaches. They emphasised that a combination of advanced electronic surveillance and robust physical safeguards was crucial in enabling a rapid and successful response to this attempt to violate the state border. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in securing international borders against determined attempts at illegal entry.
