Following the incident, the male suspect reportedly fled the scene. In the subsequent days, local law enforcement and the FBI released grainy surveillance footage and images. These visuals depicted an individual described as a person of interest, observed traversing a nearby neighborhood several hours prior to the initial emergency calls being placed.

A Breakthrough in the Investigation

A potential breakthrough emerged on Thursday, as reported by CBS News, citing individuals with intimate knowledge of the ongoing investigation. This development marks a crucial step forward, with a concerted search for the identified individual now underway. The shooting, which profoundly impacted the Providence community, has seen law enforcement facing mounting pressure to uncover new leads and demonstrate tangible progress in apprehending the suspect.

The investigation faced an initial complication with the detainment and subsequent release of a primary person of interest, identified as former U.S. Army Specialist Benjamin Erickson. The subsequent release of surveillance images and video has provided the public with the only glimpse into the evolving investigation. To aid in the pursuit of justice, the FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual responsible for the shooting.

What Authorities Have Revealed About the Suspect

Thus far, the only confirmed details publicly shared by authorities regarding the suspect are that they are seeking a male individual. This person was reportedly dressed entirely in black clothing and wore a facemask. The surveillance footage and images released have not provided a clear or definitive depiction of the suspect’s features.

Law Enforcement’s Statements on the Suspect Search

Sources within law enforcement, speaking anonymously to news outlets such as Fox News and The New York Times, indicated that investigators discovered DNA and fingerprints on shell casings recovered from the crime scene. However, Colonel Oscar Perez of the Providence Police Department clarified to Fox News that this evidence is still undergoing examination.

“And yes, we have some DNA that we manipulated and so it just progresses everyday,” Colonel Perez stated, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the forensic analysis. He added, “It progresses every day with forensics, it progresses everyday with witness statements and so yeah, we’re just trying to find out and we are going to do our best.”

The Victims of the Brown University Shooting

The two students who tragically lost their lives in the shooting have been identified as Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman of Uzbek American heritage.

Reverend Craig Smalley of the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham confirmed Ella Cook as one of his parishioners, remembering her as a “grounded, faithful, bright light” who possessed the ability to “encourage and lift up those around her.” Ella had also contributed as an assistant for Oxbridge Academic Programs in New York City and held the position of vice president for the Brown chapter of the College Republicans of America.

Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov was a graduate of Midlothian High School in Virginia, with aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon. Family and friends have consistently described him as an exceptionally kind and intelligent young man, a true “ball of joy.” His sister, in a heartfelt post on a GoFundMe page established in his memory, shared that Umurzokov “always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew.”
