South African Traffic Officers Remanded in Custody Over Nigerian Motorist’s Death
Four South African National Traffic Police officers have been remanded in custody following the death of a Nigerian motorist, identified as Osinakachukwu Onu. The Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court denied bail to the accused officers, who are facing charges related to murder and defeating the ends of justice.
The officers involved have been identified as Inspector Rudolph Foromo (29), Inspector Smanga Dladla (31), Inspector Colani Senzo Dlamini (34), and Inspector Vusumuzi Justice Simelane (36). Reports indicate that Mr. Onu, who was reportedly in South Africa legally, was pursued by these officers during an operation.
While the precise sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting remains under investigation, it is understood that the officers were on official duty at the time of the incident. Following the shooting, the suspects allegedly fled the scene. However, law enforcement authorities were able to track them down and effect their arrest.

Detectives in Klerksdorp apprehended the four officers following the death of the 37-year-old Nigerian man. The arrests were made on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. According to police statements, authorities were alerted to the incident and responded to the location. Upon arrival, they discovered that the traffic officers implicated in the event had already departed.
Preliminary investigations by detectives led them to a specific location within Klerksdorp, where the suspects were successfully traced and apprehended. This tragic incident adds to a concerning pattern of reported killings of Nigerian nationals in South Africa. In a separate case reported earlier, two Nigerians, identified only as Austin and Ayo, were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in Durban in July.
The Durban incident reportedly occurred on a Thursday evening when three masked individuals entered Austin’s office. The assailants proceeded to shoot and kill both Austin and Ayo at the scene. These recurring incidents highlight ongoing tensions and raise serious questions about the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
