A Journey of Reinvention and Resilience
LONDON – Victoria Beckham, once known as “Posh Spice” from the iconic British girl band Spice Girls, has shared her personal journey in a new three-part documentary. The Netflix series, set to launch on Thursday, offers an intimate look into her life, highlighting her struggles and triumphs as she transitioned from a pop star to a fashion designer.
Beckham, now 51, described herself as someone who “desperately wanted to be liked.” In the documentary, she reflects on her early days with the Spice Girls and the challenges she faced when the group disbanded. She admits that her public persona was often misunderstood, with many perceiving her as a “miserable cow that never smiled.”
For Beckham, performing was always her dream. However, after the Spice Girls split, she found a new passion in fashion. “It was a creative outlet,” she said. The documentary, directed by Nadia Hallgren, captures her emotional journey as she navigates the competitive world of fashion design.
Overcoming Doubts and Skepticism
One of the biggest hurdles Beckham faced was the skepticism from the fashion industry. Former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour admitted she had her doubts initially. “Most celebrities who get involved in our world are not true designers,” she said. “I was skeptical. I think we can all be a little bit snobby in the fashion business, and think maybe this is a side gig, but Victoria was one that totally proved us wrong.”
Designer Tom Ford also expressed surprise at Beckham’s decision to start her own fashion label. “I wanted to call her and say, ‘Why? Why would you do this? Do you understand this business is so tough?’” he said. He added that many people assumed Beckham would just put her name on a collection designed by someone else.
From Uncool Kid to Fashion Icon
The documentary, titled “Victoria Beckham,” delves into her early life and pop career, as well as her efforts to prepare for a high-stakes catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week. Reflecting on her school days, Beckham shared how she felt out of place but always longed to be valued. “That uncool kid at school who was awkward, that was me. But I desperately wanted to be liked, have a sense of worth,” she said.
As a mother of four and wife to former English football star David Beckham, she also discusses the financial challenges her eponymous brand has faced. The clothing label has not made an operating profit since its establishment in 2008. However, in 2024, the brand reported its fourth consecutive year of sales growth. “We were millions in the red” at one point, she admitted.
The Legacy of Spice Girls
The Spice Girls rose to worldwide fame in 1996 after the release of their first single “Wannabe,” spreading their message of girl power and eventually selling 85 million albums globally. Their success was unmatched, with only two of their 11 singles failing to reach number one on the British charts. Their first three singles all hit the US top five.
The group disbanded in 2000 but reunited for a world tour in 2007. Another reunion tour took place in 2019 without Beckham’s participation.
