Alan Hughes Shares His Journey of Grief and Resilience

Alan Hughes, a well-known presenter on Ireland AM, has opened up about the profound loss he experienced as a child. At just 10 years old, he and his siblings faced the heartbreaking reality of losing both their parents within the same year. Maureen and Kevin, his mother and father, passed away due to separate illnesses, leaving a void in the lives of their five children.

Alan, who grew up with a large family, recently shared his thoughts on this difficult period of his life. He spoke about the grief of losing his parents but emphasized that he only holds fond memories of them. “It’s strange. I have lived life without them for the majority of my life,” Alan said during an interview with the Grief Pod. “But I have very happy memories of them. I was very spoiled, and that was always the case for me.”

He described his mother as a small, frail-looking woman, yet she had a strong and hearty spirit. His father, on the other hand, was a larger man. These vivid memories of his childhood in Ballyfermot remain cherished.

Alan also revealed that he was the only person with his mother when she died, and she passed away in his arms. However, he admitted that it could have significantly changed his life if this tragedy had occurred later in his life. “Sometimes when I look back at the amount of loss I’ve had in my life between then and now, you just think ‘oh my god, can there be anyone else?’” he said. “In some ways, it could have changed me dramatically, and I’m glad that it didn’t happen later on in my life.”

Losing both parents within six months was an overwhelming experience for a 10-year-old. Alan reflected on how challenging it was to understand and process such a massive loss at that age. “I think it showed me the strength that I had inside of me because I did manage to survive it.”

After the passing of his parents, Alan faced several struggles in the following years. He moved to Wexford to live with his brother, but this arrangement didn’t last long. “I only lasted a week there. They just wanted me away from the family home, but that didn’t end well for me because I ran away and took money and even had the police looking for me,” he recalled.

Over the past decade, Alan has also lost two of his siblings, David and Doreen, to cancer. Doreen’s diagnosis was particularly significant for him, marking his first real battle. “I went to every single one of her chemo sessions with her,” he said. “They really looked after her.”

Doreen passed away from ovarian cancer in 2012, while his brother Dave succumbed to lung cancer five years later. In 2022, Alan expressed that these losses have made him more conscious of his health. The experiences have shaped his perspective on life, resilience, and the importance of cherishing the time spent with loved ones.
