A New Mayor’s Tragic Encounter

A newly elected mayor in Germany, Iris Stalzer, was found at home with multiple stab wounds, leading to a shocking incident that has captured the attention of many. According to investigators, the attack is believed to have been carried out by her teenage daughter.

Stalzer, who was elected as the mayor of Herdecke on 28 September, suffered life-threatening injuries following the incident on Tuesday. However, authorities later confirmed that her condition had stabilized and her life was no longer in danger.

Emergency services were called shortly after midday on Tuesday when Stalzer’s 17-year-old daughter reported that her mother had been seriously injured outside their home during an attempted robbery. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered Stalzer sitting in a chair with several stab wounds, indicating that the attack likely occurred indoors.

During the investigation, authorities found two knives and clothing that were believed to be used in the attack. The daughter and her 15-year-old brother were detained for further questioning.

When questioned on Tuesday evening, Stalzer identified her daughter as the suspect, according to police investigator Jens Rautenberg. However, there was no immediate information on the nature of the family conflict that led to the stabbing. Rautenberg did not comment on a possible motive during a news conference in Hagen, stating that it was still under investigation.

Prosecutor Bernd Haldorn described the case as one of bodily harm and mentioned that both police and prosecutors intended to release the children and hand them over to the youth welfare office. This office would then decide on further measures while the investigation continued.

The attack on Stalzer, which follows a series of violent incidents against local German lawmakers in recent years, drew swift condemnation from Chancellor Friedrich Merz and others. However, investigators determined on Tuesday that there was no indication of a political motive behind the attack.

Background and Previous Incidents

The regional public broadcaster WDR revealed that police had been called to Stalzer’s house on multiple occasions in the past due to reports of domestic violence. Additionally, the Spiegel news magazine reported that an incident involving Stalzer’s daughter attacking her with a knife had been reported to the police in the summer of this year.

Stalzer is set to take office on 1 November. She is a member of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is the junior party in Germany’s conservative-led national government. Herdecke is a town with approximately 23,000 residents located in western Germany’s Ruhr region, between Hagen and Dortmund.
