The Importance of English in Global Communication
Understanding and speaking English with confidence can open doors to new friendships and a deeper appreciation for different cultures and ideas. This was highlighted by Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, chairman of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Malaysia, during the 25th ESU International Council Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur. This event marked the first time the meeting was hosted in Malaysia since the organization’s establishment 25 years ago.
Tunku Dara emphasized the importance of promoting English as a global language. “During this meeting, we shared and exchanged ideas and knowledge,” she said. “We also explored what programs we could offer and what others could contribute.” The goal is to ensure that people develop the skills and confidence needed to use English in a friendly and accessible manner.
She added, “If we don’t understand English in a global context, we miss out on what is being said. To communicate effectively and build friendships, we need to understand the language.” Tunku Dara also mentioned the importance of supporting young people by promoting communication and public speaking skills, so they can engage confidently with others around the world.
Through programs involving digital media, the Education Department, supporters, alumni, and partners, the ESU hopes to make this vision a reality.
About the English-Speaking Union
The ESU is an independent, non-political, educational charity with members across the UK and US, and branches in 50 countries worldwide. It promotes English exposure through book donations and exchange programs. Tunku Dara noted that one of the ongoing challenges for ESU Malaysia is to provide thought-provoking, enabling, and informative programs that attract new members and retain existing ones.
Key Events Organized by ESU Malaysia
Among the key events organized each year is the national public speaking competition, where the winner earns the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the international competition in London. Another annual highlight is the national essay writing competition, which is divided into two categories: one for ages 13 to 15 and another for 16 to 18.
These events not only encourage students to improve their language skills but also foster a sense of community and cultural exchange.
Promoting Goodwill and Understanding
“Our aim is to promote goodwill and understanding among people of all ethnicities,” Tunku Dara stated. “ESU Malaysia is proud of its growing membership and its contribution to international understanding.”
Through its various programs and initiatives, the ESU continues to play a vital role in enhancing English language proficiency and fostering cross-cultural connections. The organization remains committed to creating opportunities for individuals to engage with the global community and contribute to a more interconnected world.
