A New Era for Seri Sarawak Public Housing Park

Once an underused space, the park in Seri Sarawak Public Housing has now been transformed into a safe and welcoming area for residents. This transformation is part of the “Merdeka 118 Public Realm Improvement” programme led by PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd (PNBMV), a subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB). The initiative is a key component of the broader KL Heritage agenda aimed at rejuvenating Kuala Lumpur’s historical core through people-focused urban renewal.

The project is a result of collaboration between PNBMV, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and Think City, with more upgrades planned around the area. The park spans approximately 16,000 square feet and serves over 7,500 residents, offering a green space designed for recreation and community interaction.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif praised the initiative, stating that it exemplifies how Kuala Lumpur can progress through community-based programmes. She highlighted the importance of working with public and private partners to create tangible impacts that benefit the community and lead to long-term positive outcomes.

“The elderly now have spaces to stay active, while families and children can enjoy a safe and welcoming place,” she said. “Initiatives like this bring us closer to our vision of ‘A Prosperous City for All by 2030.’”

Enhancing Community Spaces

With an investment of about RM800,000, the previously underused space has been upgraded to include children’s play areas, shaded seating, lighting, landscaping, improved walkways, and drainage systems. These improvements offer new community spaces that promote active living and stronger neighbourly bonds.

PNBMV’s commitment to sustainable methods was a central focus of the project. Durable, low-maintenance materials, native plants, and permeable pavements were used for stormwater management, ensuring the park remains environmentally friendly and cost-effective to maintain over time.

Tengku Datuk Ab Aziz Tengku Mahmud, CEO of PNBMV, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the first park at Jalan Hang Tuah Public Housing (PA). He noted that the upgrade benefited over 800 residents and turned the park into a lively space where families and friends gather.

“The transformation of PA Seri Sarawak demonstrates how community-centred placemaking can turn an overlooked corner into a shared asset,” said Datuk Hamdan Abdul Majeed, managing director of Think City. He emphasized that neighbourhood parks are not just green spaces but social infrastructure that strengthens bonds and well-being, giving a sense of belonging.

A Sense of Belonging

“For many of us, it shows that our community matters and that we are not left behind in the city’s progress,” said Mohd Azmi Zakaria, chairman of the PA Seri Sarawak Residents Association. “We are deeply grateful for this transformation which will inspire residents to take even greater care of our shared spaces and strengthen the spirit of togetherness.”

The park’s transformation is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. It reflects the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders to create a livable, sustainable, and inclusive environment for all. As more upgrades are planned, the park stands as a symbol of hope and progress for the residents of Seri Sarawak and beyond.
