Renowned Chinese Artist Fan Zeng Welcomes First Son at 87, Amidst Family Estrangement
In a significant personal announcement, celebrated Chinese painter Fan Zeng, aged 87, has revealed that his wife, Xu Meng, aged 37, has given birth to their first son. The news, confirmed by Fan himself on Thursday, marks a joyous occasion for the couple, who are reportedly happy and content with their new addition. The family has since relocated from their previous villa to a new residence.
This personal milestone, however, is shadowed by a public declaration of a complete severance of ties with two of his children, Fan Xiaohui and Fan Zhongda, and their respective families. Fan Zeng has leveled serious accusations against them, alleging they spread false claims in August that he had been “kidnapped and had his assets seized” by Xu Meng. He asserts that these allegations led to his wife being severely defamed.
According to Fan’s statement, his children acted under the guise of filial concern, but their true intention was to sow discord within the family. He claims they disregarded his reputation, health, and lawful interests, and even endangered the safety of himself, Xu Meng, and their newborn child, thereby disrupting their peaceful life.

Legal and Professional Disassociation
In addition to the personal estrangement, Fan Zeng has explicitly barred Fan Xiaohui and Fan Zhongda from utilizing his name for any artistic or commercial ventures. He has stated his intention to pursue legal action should his reputation be exploited for exhibitions, art sales, or any other commercial purposes.
Fan emphatically declared that all his personal and professional affairs will henceforth be managed exclusively by his wife, Xu Meng. He underscored that no other individual possesses the right to interfere in these matters.
Fan Xiaohui is Fan Zeng’s daughter from his second marriage. Fan Zhongda is his stepson, whose mother is Zhang Guiyun, Fan’s third wife.
A New Beginning and Past Marriages
Fan Zeng announced his marriage to Xu Meng in April of the current year. He explained that following the passing of his third wife, Zhang Guiyun, in 2021, he suffered a mild stroke, which significantly impacted his ability to continue his artistic pursuits. He credited Xu Meng with providing attentive care that facilitated his physical and mental recovery, leading to their decision to spend their lives together.
The controversy surrounding the alleged asset seizure emerged in August when Fan Xiaohui publicly claimed her father had “gone missing.” She alleged that Xu Meng had taken him from their villa and moved valuable antiques and paintings, effectively confiscating his assets. Notably, she did not report these claims to the authorities.
Fan Zeng’s marital history is notable. His first marriage was to the esteemed poet and calligrapher Lin Hui in 1963, which ended in divorce five years later. He then married Bian Baohua, a fellow painter and his former classmate. Subsequently, he developed a relationship with Zhang Guiyun, the wife of a close friend, whom he married several years after her own divorce.
Fan Zeng’s Esteemed Artistic Legacy
Fan Zeng is widely recognized as a towering figure in contemporary Chinese art and is considered the most valuable living painter in the country. His prolific career has resulted in substantial auction sales, reportedly surpassing 2.3 billion yuan (approximately US$320 million) as of 2024, according to China’s National Business Daily.
His artworks are held in prestigious international collections, including museums in Japan and the United Kingdom. Many of his pieces have achieved record-breaking prices at auction. Notable sales include “Bamboo” and “Magpie,” which each fetched over 40 million yuan, and “Lingquan Daofeng,” which sold for 18.4 million yuan. A significant number of his other paintings have commanded prices exceeding US$1 million each, solidifying his status as a master artist.
