Escalating Tensions in Lahore as TLP Activists Clash with Police

On October 12, Pakistan witnessed significant unrest as over 100 members of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) were arrested and 112 police officers were injured during violent clashes with law enforcement in Lahore. The incident occurred as the religio-political party attempted to organize a march toward Islamabad in support of Palestinians.

Lahore DIG Operations Faisal Kamran reported that the Shahdara Town police station was targeted by TLP activists, who vandalized the premises. “The state has given the right to protest, but no one is allowed to vandalize,” he emphasized. He also highlighted that daily life in the city had been disrupted due to the protests, with vehicles damaged and personal belongings stolen.

According to the DIG, more than 100 protesters were taken into custody, while 112 police personnel sustained injuries during the clashes. “Doors of negotiations are open for a peaceful solution,” he added, indicating the authorities’ willingness to resolve the situation through dialogue.

Impact on Islamabad and Rawalpindi

The unrest extended beyond Lahore, affecting major cities like Islamabad and Rawalpindi. For the second consecutive day, road closures and internet service suspensions have disrupted daily life in these areas. Key roads such as Faizabad interchange and IJP Road remained completely closed to traffic, with shipping containers used to block access to critical junctions like Khanna Pul, Kuri Road, and Dhoke Kala Khan.

The Islamabad administration sealed off the Red Zone and placed containers around D-Chowk to prevent unauthorized access. A complete ban on heavy vehicle entry into Rawalpindi was enforced, and roads leading to the airport were also blocked with containers.

Educational institutions in both cities were shut down, and internet services in several parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi remained suspended, causing inconvenience for residents and businesses. The Metro Bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad was halted due to security concerns, with police deployed at the Faizabad interchange—a site known for previous TLP sit-ins.

All restaurants and hotels in the Faizabad area were also sealed by authorities, further intensifying the impact of the protests.

Government Measures and Political Response

In response to the growing tensions, the authorities imposed Section 144 of the CrPC across Punjab, which prohibits the display of weapons and public gatherings. These measures were taken following a call for protests by the Saad Hussain Rizvi-led religious and political party.

A day prior to the clashes, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry stated that the government was working to prevent the TLP’s planned march toward Islamabad through peaceful means. He emphasized that the state would not be “blackmailed by mobs” and reiterated that preemptive actions had been taken to avoid any disruptions.

Chaudhry accused the TLP of exploiting sensitive issues for political gain, pointing out that the party had previously attacked public properties. He questioned the rationale behind the march, noting that Palestinians were celebrating a recent peace deal in Gaza.

“The main party to the issue is the Palestinians, and they are celebrating the recent peace deal,” he said, suggesting that the TLP’s actions were misaligned with the actual developments on the ground.

Ongoing Challenges and Public Concerns

As the situation continues to unfold, the public remains concerned about the escalating violence and its impact on daily life. The government faces the challenge of balancing the right to protest with maintaining public order and safety.

With ongoing clashes and road closures, the affected regions are experiencing significant disruptions. The authorities have shown a firm stance, but the path to a peaceful resolution remains uncertain. As tensions persist, the need for dialogue and understanding becomes increasingly vital to prevent further escalation.
