The Unexpected Departure of Molly Qerim from ESPN

Molly Qerim, a well-known figure on ESPN’s First Take, has left the network in a surprising move that has sparked a lot of discussion among fans and colleagues. According to veteran ESPN broadcaster Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo, Qerim may have felt embarrassed by the possibility of being removed from the show, which led her to make the decision to leave.

Qerim stunned viewers when she abruptly ended her 19-year career with ESPN last month, despite earlier reports suggesting she would stay until the end of the year. She took to Instagram to confirm her departure as a host of First Take after a decade in the role. A day later, her long-time colleague Stephen A. Smith revealed that she had actually left the entire company.

ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus admitted that Qerim’s timing surprised them, but he explained that they had not been able to reach an agreement on a contract renewal. Russo suggested that Qerim might have left to avoid the embarrassment of being seen as a “lame duck” if she were to be replaced.

  • “I think they probably wanted to move her around a little bit and try something different,” Russo said on the SI Media podcast. “Not that the ratings were bad, it’s just the nature of the beast. You’re on air forever, they like to make a change for making a change’s sake. I think they wanted to keep Molly with the network, and I don’t know if Molly wanted to do that.”

Financial Discontent and Career Ambitions

The departure has also raised questions about financial issues. Marcellus Wiley, a former ESPN star, claimed that Qerim left because she was only earning $500k per year, significantly less than her co-host Stephen A. Smith, who earns almost 40 times as much. Wiley suggested that Qerim felt disrespected by her salary, especially since Smith recently signed a new $20m-a-year contract.

Other female stars on the network, such as Malika Andrews and Mina Kimes, are reported to be making seven-figure salaries, leaving Qerim unhappy given her long tenure on one of the network’s most successful shows.

Wiley mentioned on his ‘Dat Dude TV’ podcast that Qerim wanted to host other shows, including her own program, but ESPN bosses were not open to the idea. “That wasn’t happening,” Wiley added. “They weren’t signing off on her doing her own show or any other show at the network. Molly finally woke up and said enough is enough.”

Exploring New Opportunities

Magnus, the ESPN President of Content, stated that one of the reasons Qerim left was because she wanted to do other things. He emphasized that Qerim was a wonderful person and an unbelievable teammate.

  • “There was a couple dimensions to this. One, is obviously we were in a renewal conversation. Two, is 10 years to do something like that is a long time. I’m not going to speak for her, but I think there was a feeling that she wants to do other things, and successfully being on a top show like that for a decade qualifies as maybe I can turn the page and do something else.”

Magnus also mentioned that they tried to have Qerim do other things and redo the agreement, but it became more about her wanting to explore other opportunities. “It ended up being easier for her to make a clean break entirely.”

Conclusion

The sudden exit of Molly Qerim from ESPN has raised many questions about the reasons behind her decision. While some believe it was due to financial concerns, others suggest it was about career ambitions and the desire for new challenges. Regardless of the exact reasons, her departure marks a significant moment in the history of ESPN’s First Take.
