Aftyn Behn’s Controversial Comments Resurface in Congressional Race

Aftyn Behn, a 35-year-old Democrat running for Congress to represent Nashville, has found herself at the center of a heated controversy after her past comments about hating the city resurfaced. In a clip from the GRITS podcast in February 2020, Behn can be heard saying, “I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville. I hate it.” These remarks quickly went viral and sparked significant backlash.

In response, Behn posted a nearly two-minute video on Thursday evening, attempting to clarify her position. She labeled the renewed attention as a “national GOP’s new attack” and claimed it was based on “wild rumors.” She also tried to assert her connection to Nashville by mentioning that she visits the Ryman Auditorium regularly.

Behn acknowledged that while she wants Nashville to improve so people can thrive, she is bothered by the city’s reputation as a hub for bachelorette parties and honky-tonk venues. She admitted, “Sure, I get mad at the bachelorettes sometimes, I get mad at the pedal taverns.”

The timing of the resurfaced comments has raised questions, with Behn suggesting they emerged because she is “close to winning.” She referenced Lord of the Rings, saying, “The Republican eye of Sauron has finally shifted toward moi,” implying that Republicans are now targeting her.

Despite her efforts to defend herself, Behn has faced criticism from Republicans, who argue it is absurd for her to represent a place she claims to hate. The Republican National Committee (RNC) questioned, “If Behn hates Tennessee so much, why is she trying to represent it?”

Behn’s campaign manager, Kate Briefs, countered that the GOP is “clutching at straws.” She stated that Republicans are trying to distract from their policies that raise costs for Tennessee families and reduce access to healthcare. Briefs added that Behn aims to lower costs and make groceries more affordable by eliminating the state’s grocery tax.

However, Behn faces an uphill battle against Republican Matt Van Epps, a former Tennessee General Services commissioner. They are competing for the state’s 7th congressional seat, which was previously held by Republican Mark Green. Green resigned earlier this summer to take a job in the private sector.

The seat is currently rated R +10 by the Cook Political Report, but the race has shifted slightly toward Democrats, moving from “solid Republican” to “lean Republican.” Trump-aligned super PAC MAGA Inc. recently entered the race with a small expenditure of $15,000 for phone banking.

Significant Democratic electoral victories earlier this month have drawn media attention and financial support to the race. Former vice president Kamala Harris visited the area to boost Behn’s campaign, calling her race “the most competitive race in America.” However, she did not mention Behn by name or appear alongside her.

Donald Trump supported Van Epps via a tele-rally, calling him a “true America First patriot.” Behn has received endorsements from groups such as the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, AFL-CIO, and the Working Families Party. In contrast, Van Epps is backed by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the Club for Growth PAC, and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Green’s sudden departure from Congress came as a surprise. He announced his retirement with a heavy heart, citing an exciting opportunity in the private sector. Green also mentioned his previous retirement announcement and subsequent reversal, stating he stayed to ensure President Trump’s border security measures were passed.

Green’s exit followed allegations of a 2024 affair and public criticism from his ex-wife online. His resignation has left many wondering about the future of the seat and the impact on the ongoing congressional race.
