Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations have been called into question by football pundit Paul Scholes, who believes their inability to secure victories in crucial matches will ultimately hinder their chances of lifting the trophy. Despite currently holding a narrow lead at the top of the table, the Gunners suffered a setback with a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, raising concerns about their resilience in high-stakes encounters.

The match at Villa Park saw Leandro Trossard equalize after Matty Cash’s opener, seemingly securing a point for Mikel Arteta’s team. However, a late goal from Emiliano Buendia dashed Arsenal’s hopes and propelled Aston Villa into the title conversation. Meanwhile, Manchester City, considered Arsenal’s main rival, delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Sunderland, further intensifying the pressure on the league leaders.

While bookmakers still favour Arsenal to win the title, Scholes argues that the team must demonstrate their ability to win “big games” to end their 22-year wait for Premier League glory.

“Man City have a great chance now, don’t they?” Scholes commented on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. “I still don’t think they’re quite right, but they always get better in the second-half of the season, and the thing with Arsenal is they can’t win a big game.”

Scholes elaborated on his concerns, stating, “Until they start winning big games, they’ve got no chance of winning the league. They lost to Liverpool, they couldn’t beat Man City at home when they were struggling. Aston Villa are a good team, don’t get me wrong, but Arsenal just can’t win big games. They couldn’t beat Chelsea after they went down to ten men.”

Here’s a breakdown of Arsenal’s struggles in key matches, according to Scholes:

  • Loss to Liverpool: A defeat against a direct rival highlighted Arsenal’s vulnerability in top-of-the-table clashes.
  • Draw against Manchester City: Failing to capitalize on Manchester City’s struggles at home further exposed Arsenal’s inability to seize opportunities in crucial games.
  • Loss to Aston Villa: A late defeat against a team also vying for a top spot raised questions about Arsenal’s consistency and mental fortitude.
  • Draw against Chelsea: Dropping points against a ten-man Chelsea side indicated a lack of ruthlessness and inability to exploit advantageous situations.

Scholes emphasized the importance of winning against rivals, stating, “If you’re going to win the league, you’ve got to start winning some big games, you’ve got to beat your rivals, and they can’t do it.” He also pointed out Manchester City’s historical tendency to improve after January, giving them an edge in the title race.

Nicky Butt, another former Manchester United player and teammate of Scholes, echoed these sentiments, backing Manchester City to overtake Arsenal and secure another league title.

“I did say I fancied Man City for the title about a month ago,” Butt revealed. “They’re suddenly clicking. The reason I think Man City will win the league is Pep [Guardiola]. He’s got the experience. I can see him winning the league this year and then leaving.”

Looking ahead, Arsenal will aim to bounce back from their defeat when they host bottom-placed Wolves. Meanwhile, Manchester City faces a potentially challenging away game against Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa travels to West Ham.

In summary, the pressure is mounting on Arsenal to prove their title credentials by securing victories in crucial matches. Their upcoming fixtures will be vital in determining whether they can overcome their perceived inability to win big games and end their long wait for Premier League success. The experience and form of Manchester City, coupled with Arsenal’s struggles against top opposition, suggest a potentially tight title race in the months to come.
