Aston Villa’s Unwavering Focus: Title Race Talk Dismissed Amidst Impressive Winning Streak

Despite an incredible run of form that has propelled them to third place in the Premier League, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery remains grounded, insisting the club is “not really” in the title race. This stance was reiterated following a dramatic comeback victory against Chelsea, where substitute Ollie Watkins delivered a match-winning performance with two crucial goals.

The win marked Aston Villa’s eleventh consecutive victory across all competitions, a remarkable feat that places them in close pursuit of league leaders Manchester City and Arsenal. With a crucial fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on the horizon, the possibility of drawing level on points with Mikel Arteta’s side looms large. However, Emery’s pragmatic approach suggests the team is not getting ahead of itself.

“Not really,” Emery responded when questioned about his belief in Aston Villa’s title aspirations. “I have a feeling that we are competing very well, and we are now third in the league with two teams in Manchester City and Arsenal – wow, fantastic teams. We have to play 38 matches. We have played 18 and still have 20 to play. Teams like Liverpool, like Chelsea, like Manchester United – we must compete against them. We have to try to be consistent over 38 matches.”

When pressed on whether a victory against Arsenal would alter his perspective, Emery acknowledged the immense challenge ahead. “You are asking me now about the match against Arsenal? It’s very, very difficult. Now it is ‘wow’,” he stated. “In the Emirates they are so, so, so strong. The next challenge is the biggest we will face because they are the best team now. They are playing fantastic in the Premier League and Champions League. We have very good players and I try to set our demands high for everything.”

Chelsea’s Frustration: Lessons in Game Management Needed

On the other side of the dugout, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, observing from the press box due to a touchline ban, expressed his team’s need to improve their game management. The Blues had taken an early lead through Joao Pedro and had opportunities to extend their advantage before halftime. However, the second half saw their control falter, ultimately leading to their downfall.

“The goal we conceded was the turning point,” Maresca admitted. “Until that goal, we were completely in control of the game. It’s not the first time that has happened. When we concede a goal, even if we are winning and we concede a goal, we struggle a little with the management of the game. It’s something that for sure we need to improve. In this moment it’s difficult to analyse because we need to understand again why when we concede a goal, we struggle to manage the game in a better way.”

The substitution of influential playmaker Cole Palmer in the 72nd minute also drew attention. Palmer, now fit enough for a full match, did not conceal his displeasure, a reaction Maresca downplayed. “He was working very good,” Maresca commented on Palmer’s performance. “He was on the ball and off the ball, pressing, he was very good. We have another game now in 48 hours (against Bournemouth), so he was good and we are happy that he’s back.”

Post-Match Incident Under Investigation

Adding to the drama of the evening, Chelsea are reportedly investigating an incident where a plastic water bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa away dugout following the final whistle. The visiting club has reported the matter to the referee, Stuart Attwell, though the origin of the thrown object remains unclear.

This incident occurred amidst a backdrop of Aston Villa’s impressive resurgence under Unai Emery. The team’s ability to consistently secure victories, even when trailing, highlights a growing resilience and tactical acumen. Their upcoming clash with Arsenal promises to be a significant test, one that could offer further clarity on their true potential this season, though Emery’s immediate focus remains on consistent performance over the long haul. The club’s impressive form has led to extensive discussion about their capabilities, with previous reports highlighting their triumphs in European competitions and their efforts to overcome defensive challenges. The tactical prowess of Unai Emery has been a recurring theme in analyses of Aston Villa’s success.
