Super Eagles Stars Shine in Pre-AFCON Club Clashes
As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches, several key players for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, have delivered standout performances for their respective clubs, signaling strong form ahead of the continental showpiece. Victor Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, and Alex Iwobi all made significant contributions in their final club appearances before joining the national team’s training camp.
Osimhen’s Goal-Scoring Masterclass for Galatasaray
Victor Osimhen was on target as Galatasaray secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Antalyaspor in a league fixture. The Nigerian striker’s goal served as a potent warning to Nigeria’s AFCON rivals, demonstrating his predatory instincts and ability to find the back of the net even from difficult angles.
The match saw Galatasaray assert dominance from the outset. Leroy Sané opened the scoring in the seventh minute, quickly followed by a second goal from Roland Sallai four minutes later, establishing a comfortable lead.
The moment that truly ignited the stadium, however, came in the 56th minute. Receiving an expertly weighted pass from Yunus Akgün on the left flank, Osimhen showcased his athleticism and determination. He drove purposefully into the penalty area and unleashed a ferocious shot from an incredibly tight angle, finding the top corner to extend Galatasaray’s advantage to 3-0. This goal was a testament to his skill and composure under pressure.
While Antalyaspor managed to pull one back late in the game, Galatasaray responded swiftly. Substitute Mauro Icardi sealed the emphatic win with a fourth goal, ensuring all three points remained with the league leaders. This victory propelled Galatasaray to 39 points, solidifying their position at the summit of the league standings.
Fulham Trio Impresses in Premier League Victory
In England, a trio of Super Eagles stars – Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, and Alex Iwobi – were instrumental in Fulham’s impressive 3-1 win against Burnley, handing the Clarets their seventh consecutive Premier League defeat.
Harry Wilson was the catalyst for Fulham’s attacking prowess, providing two assists before scoring the team’s third goal in what proved to be an entertaining encounter.
The visitors took the lead when Wilson’s low corner kick, delivered with precision, managed to find its way past Burnley’s full-back, Quilindschy Hartman. Emile Smith Rowe was on hand to divert the ball into the net from close range.
Burnley managed to equalize through Lesley Ugochukwu’s strike, but Fulham quickly regained the advantage just after the half-hour mark. Calvin Bassey was left unmarked to head home uncontested following a fine piece of control and cross from Wilson, doubling Fulham’s lead.
Wilson then added his name to the score sheet, completing Fulham’s impressive performance with a classy guided shot into the far corner. The goal was set up by a clever pass from Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze, highlighting the attacking synergy between the two players.
Oliver Sonne scored a late consolation goal for Burnley, but it proved to be a mere footnote in a match dominated by Fulham’s clinical display.
Bassey and Chukwueze both played the entire 90 minutes, showcasing their stamina and importance to Fulham’s defensive and offensive structures. Iwobi came on as a substitute in the 79th minute, replacing Sasa Lukic, and contributed to the team’s solid finish.
