Kwekwe Roars Back to Top-Flight Football with New Stadium and Premier League Debut
Kwekwe, Zimbabwe is set to witness a monumental return to top-flight football after a 16-year hiatus. Newly-promoted Hardrock FC will officially usher in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era for the city in March 2026, marking their high-profile debut against the reigning champions, Scottland FC. This inaugural fixture is more than just a season opener; it serves as the grand unveiling of the state-of-the-art Chahwanda Stadium, a 15,000-seater facility poised to become the new epicentre of Midlands football.
The significance of this event cannot be overstated for Kwekwe’s passionate football fanbase. While the city had a PSL presence during the 2025 season through Kwekwe United, local supporters were deprived of the opportunity to watch their team play at home. The historic Baghdad Stadium, unfortunately, had fallen into a state of disrepair, forcing Kwekwe United to adopt Gweru’s Ascot Stadium as their temporary home ground. This meant the last time a PSL match was actually held within Kwekwe’s city limits was back in 2009, featuring the now-defunct Lancashire Steel.
“We have had Kwekwe United in the PSL, but they didn’t really play in the city,” explained Hardrock FC official Absolom Mwenda. “This is the first time in 16 years that a PSL match will be held in Kwekwe. We are incredibly excited; this brings massive attention back to our city and revitalizes our local football scene.”
Hardrock FC’s Ascent and Strategic Preparations
Hardrock FC’s journey to the PSL has been a testament to their determination and strategic prowess. Under the guidance of veteran coach Kelvin Kaindu, the club secured promotion after a fiercely contested Central Region Division One title race, ultimately clinching the top spot ahead of their rivals, Sheasham.
The club has reportedly been making significant moves to bolster their squad, acquiring high-profile signings in an effort to establish themselves among the league’s elite. This proactive approach signals their ambition to not just participate but to compete effectively in their maiden PSL season.
The opening match against Scottland FC is already generating considerable buzz, with many observers viewing it as a symbolic “shift in power” between two of the league’s emerging and financially robust clubs. Despite the formidable challenge of facing the defending champions right out of the gate, Mwenda views the timing as ideal for making a statement.
A Bold Opening Fixture: Motivation Over Intimidation
Mwenda candidly admitted that the prospect of facing the champions was initially a source of apprehension. However, this initial fear has transformed into a powerful motivator.
“To be honest, playing Scottland was my worst nightmare before it actually happened,” Mwenda confessed. “But as it sank in, I realised playing them first is actually okay. They have a massive fan base and a lot of buzz. It puts us in the spotlight and shows everyone what we are trying to achieve here. It’s an opportunity to learn from the best and to gauge our readiness immediately.”
While the club might be labelled as “moneybags” due to their ambitious investments, their outlook for their inaugural season remains grounded. The primary focus is on adaptation and survival in the demanding PSL environment.
“We want to provide entertainment for our fans, but most importantly, we need to adapt to the higher level of competition,” Mwenda emphasized. “We are taking baby steps with the primary goal of survival. Building a foundation for sustained success is our long-term vision.”
The return of top-flight football to Kwekwe, coupled with the inauguration of a modern stadium and an ambitious newly-promoted side, promises an exciting chapter for Zimbabwean football. The Chahwanda Stadium is expected to not only host thrilling PSL encounters but also to serve as a catalyst for grassroots development and a source of pride for the entire Midlands region. The league’s established order will undoubtedly be watching closely as Hardrock FC embarks on its challenging yet exhilarating journey.
