Muringai’s Historic Double: Zimbabwean Defender Conquers Mozambique with UD Songo

The 2025 Mozambican football season will be remembered as a landmark achievement for Zimbabwean defender Tinotenda Muringai. At the young age of 24, the former Dynamos stalwart has reached a significant career milestone, spearheading União Desportiva do Songo (UD Songo) to an unprecedented league and cup double.

Based in Tete, UD Songo established their dominance early in the campaign. They clinched the Moçambola, Mozambique’s premier football league, in spectacular fashion back in November. The decisive victory came with a resounding 5-1 triumph over Textáfrica do Chimoio, mathematically securing the title with five matches still remaining. UD Songo’s league run was nothing short of a relentless surge, with the title-clinching match marking their 17th consecutive league win. This phenomenal streak propelled them to 56 points, creating an insurmountable lead over second-placed Black Bulls, who could not bridge the gap even with games in hand. This latest championship adds to UD Songo’s impressive history, following previous league titles in 2017, 2018, and 2022.

The crowning glory arrived just last weekend in the Mozambique Cup final. In a fiercely contested match against fierce rivals Black Bulls, the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation time. UD Songo demonstrated remarkable composure and resilience under pressure, ultimately prevailing 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout. This victory not only secured the cup but also completed the club’s historic first-ever domestic double in Mozambican football history.

For Muringai, now in his third year with UD Songo, these silverware triumphs represent the culmination of his dedication and development.

“It’s a great feeling,” Muringai shared, reflecting on the momentous occasion. “It was my dream to win a trophy with UD Songo since I arrived here in 2023. We reached the final of the Cup twice in the last two years and lost, but this time around we won. I am happy that we managed to make history as the first team to win a double in the domestic scene.”

The Zimbabwean left-back has been an integral part of a formidable squad that boasts considerable talent. UD Songo’s roster includes South African football legend Dominguez (Elias Pelembe) and the prolific striker Luís Miquissone, who notably scored a hat-trick in the league-deciding match, bringing his season tally to an impressive 14 goals.

Muringai’s impact on the double-winning campaign extended beyond his defensive duties. He enjoyed his most productive season in Mozambique to date, proving to be a significant attacking threat with his overlapping runs from full-back. The defender contributed two goals and provided six assists throughout the season, showcasing his all-around capabilities.

“I think I have grown and developed well here,” Muringai stated. “As a foreigner, it’s not easy to come to a foreign land, play regularly, and win trophies. This is definitely my best season in this country and it’s fulfilling to contribute to the team’s achievements.”

With the domestic objectives successfully met, Muringai’s focus is now shifting towards continental aspirations. He is eagerly anticipating the CAF Champions League. Although his previous experience in the competition with UD Songo ended prematurely, he is confident that the current squad, further strengthened by the additions of teammates like Yamikani Chester and Richard Mbulu, is well-equipped for the challenges of Africa’s premier club competition.

“I think this time around we are much stronger and we are looking forward to reaching the Group Stages,” he expressed with palpable confidence.

Despite his considerable success in Tete, Muringai’s ambitions remain global. He continues to articulate his “big dream” of playing in Europe and, crucially, earning a call-up to the Zimbabwean national team. Given his current form and the historic achievements of this season, it is highly probable that scouts for the Warriors, Zimbabwe’s national team, will be closely monitoring the progress of the man making such a significant impact north of the Limpopo River.
