The Australian cricket team is facing a significant selection dilemma as calls intensify for all-rounder Cameron Green to be dropped. This comes in the wake of their first home Ashes defeat in 15 years, exposing at least four potential issues within their top seven batting order.

Batting Order Under Scrutiny

Following a dismal performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), both new opener Jake Weatherald and No.3 Marnus Labuschagne, alongside Green, find themselves under immense pressure after registering consecutive failures with the bat. The veteran Usman Khawaja, who occupied the No.5 position in the Boxing Day Test and is nearing 39, is also reportedly contemplating retirement after the current series concludes.

While Weatherald and Labuschagne are widely expected to retain their places for the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) starting on January 4, Green’s position in the team is hanging by a thread. His batting average of a mere 18.66 throughout the series has drawn widespread criticism.

Green’s Struggles and Fan Outcry

Cameron Green, who returned from injury to bat at No.3 in the World Test Championship final in June, has gradually been pushed further down the batting order. His current form has led to him keeping fellow all-rounder Beau Webster, who impressed in seven Tests this year, out of the side this summer.

The dissatisfaction among cricket fans is palpable, with many taking to social media to voice their opinions. Online commentary has been scathing:

  • “They should have a Classic Catches-style phone-in vote for Cameron Green’s worst dismissal of the summer,” one fan quipped.
  • Another remarked, “A ‘generational talent’ who averages less than the busted flush Ollie Pope? Of course he’ll get another chance. He’s really tall.”
  • A third commenter suggested, “Series wrapped up. Should’ve been dropped for Boxing Day Test too. Webster needs to get a game.”
  • “Way too many chances. Overrated and time for Webster to come back in the side,” echoed another disgruntled supporter.

Expert Criticism of Green’s Approach

Even former Test star and Channel Seven commentator Simon Katich has weighed in, criticising Green’s approach to his dismissal in the second innings. Katich specifically pointed to Green’s attempt to charge the bowler, describing it as “premeditated batting.”

“You’re making a decision before you even know what length the ball is being bowled,” Katich explained. “So it’s just predetermined rubbish. Watch the ball and play it instinctively off the track.”

Labuschagne’s Form Dip and Weatherald’s Last Chance

Marnus Labuschagne concludes a challenging 2025, having accumulated just 271 runs from eight Tests at an average of 20.84. Despite being dropped for the tour of the West Indies, he was recalled for the Ashes based on strong Sheffield Shield performances. While his catching has been a highlight of the summer, his batting returns have consistently fallen short of expectations. Labuschagne will need a significant contribution in Sydney to secure his place for Australia’s next Test series.

Jake Weatherald, who made his debut in Perth as a replacement for Sam Konstas, might be facing his final opportunity at the SCG. After an encouraging 72 in Brisbane, his subsequent performances have been underwhelming, averaging only 20.85. In Australia’s second innings at the MCG, Weatherald, who batted at No.3 due to Scott Boland opening as a nightwatchman, left a ball from England captain Ben Stokes that went on to hit the stumps, a dismissal that summed up his recent struggles.

Stand-in Captain’s Perspective

When questioned about the form of Labuschagne and Green, stand-in Australian captain Steve Smith acknowledged that batting has “not been easy.” He defended Labuschagne’s recall, stating, “Marn got dropped, went back to Shield cricket and demanded selection, with a mountain of runs. He probably hasn’t had the output that he’s wanted in the last couple. He played some really nice innings in the first two Tests.”

Regarding Green, Smith commented, “Greeny’s had a few nice starts as well, just hasn’t been able to go on with it and get the results he’s been after. But he’s a quality player, he’s done it against some good oppositions in the past, and hopefully he can turn it around.”

Green’s Dismissals Highlight Concerns

Adding to the concerns, Green’s dismissals have been particularly concerning. After being run out on day one, he once again gifted his wicket in the second innings. The 26-year-old attempted to guide a delivery from Stokes to the off-side, only to be caught at second slip in what was described as a soft dismissal.

The Australian batting lineup has heavily relied on Travis Head for runs throughout the series, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey also making significant contributions in both innings in Adelaide. The upcoming Test at the SCG will be a critical juncture for several players facing uncertain futures.
