A New Chapter for Eberechi Eze
Crystal Palace’s star player, Adam Wharton, has shared his strategy on how to contain Eberechi Eze as the newly signed Arsenal star prepares for his first match against his former team. The England international Eze was a key figure in a summer transfer battle between Tottenham and their north London rivals, Arsenal. In the end, Eze chose to return to his boyhood club, where he had been released at the age of 13.
Eze has started his time at the Emirates with promise, contributing three assists in his 10 appearances for the club. He is set to continue his new side’s strong Premier League form against Palace on Sunday afternoon.
However, Oliver Glasner’s side’s visit to north London may not be without challenges for Eze, as his old teammates are already planning to use their insider knowledge to disrupt him on the day.
Wharton, who has also become part of Thomas Tuchel’s England plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup, acknowledged the threat Eze poses. He mentioned that there is one thing he won’t be doing against the 27-year-old.
‘Don’t dive in!’ Wharton told Jamie Redknapp for Sky Sports. ‘Let him make the first move and I can react off that, that’s probably the best move.’
‘Hopefully he doesn’t watch this before,’ the 21-year-old added pointedly.
Despite the challenges, Eze is regarded highly by Wharton, and the feeling is mutual. Eze praised Wharton in an interview with Redknapp, calling him an incredible player to play with. He noted that Wharton is very calm and composed, and for someone so young, he is very mature and wise.
‘When you speak to him it feels like you’re speaking to someone older than you,’ Eze said.
Glasner & Co will be looking to get back to winning ways against the Premier League leaders, having lost in Europe mid-week against Cypriot outfit AEK Larnaca. However, Eze will aim to spoil Palace’s plans to disrupt their reunion and show his former team what they’re missing.
The player spoke about his heartfelt decision to move to Arsenal over Tottenham on the eve of the match. He detailed how ‘special’ it was to make his debut for the club earlier this season.
‘I was prepared to go to Tottenham, but from the moment Arsenal came, it was always going to be them,’ Eze told the Athletic.
‘My first (senior) Arsenal game was special. It almost didn’t feel real because it’s something I’ve been dreaming of for a long time.
‘Playing for Arsenal from eight to 13, it’s been in the back of my mind wanting to go back. It felt like the realisation of a dream.’
