A Royal Recognition

The Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Professor James Ayatse, is scheduled to confer the chieftaincy title of Vanya-U-Dedoo-U-Tiv, meaning “Good Guest of the Tiv Nation,” upon Isaac Akinkunmi on Saturday in Gboko. This esteemed recognition highlights Akinkunmi’s deep integration and significant contributions to the socio-economic fabric of the Tiv people and Benue State as a whole. In a touching parallel, his wife, Mrs. Akinkunmi, will also be honoured with the title Hwan Vanya-U-Dedoo-U-Tiv, signifying “The Rib of the Good Guest of the Tiv Nation,” acknowledging her role as a supportive partner in his endeavours.

Humble Beginnings in Benue

Akinkunmi’s connection with Benue State began when he first arrived as a youth corps member. His primary assignment was at the Makurdi branch of North Brewery, marking the initial chapter of his professional life in the state. It was after completing his mandatory one-year national service that Akinkunmi made the pivotal decision to settle in Benue and lay the foundation for his future enterprises.

The Genesis of Tito Plastics

His entrepreneurial spirit soon manifested in the establishment of Tito Plastics Nigeria Ltd. In these nascent stages, Akinkunmi’s business model was one of resourcefulness and grit. He personally engaged in scavenging for used cans and plastic wares from the streets of Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo. These discarded materials formed the raw feedstock for his recycling venture.

“The journey of my life can be described as ‘from scavenging to the boardroom,’” Akinkunmi stated, reflecting on this transformative period. “I came to Benue as a youth corps member and, after my service year, decided to settle in the state. I established Tito Plastics, a company that recycles cans, plastics, and other wares found on the streets of Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo. I personally moved around these streets scavenging for materials.”

This hands-on approach, driven by a clear vision, allowed him to build his business from the ground up. What began as a small-scale operation, meticulously collecting and processing waste materials, gradually blossomed into a significant enterprise.

From Recycling to a Conglomerate

The modest beginnings of Tito Plastics served as the fertile ground for what would eventually grow into a diversified and successful business empire. Akinkunmi’s dedication and astute business acumen propelled the company’s expansion, leading to the formation of the Tito Group of Companies. Today, the Tito Group is a prominent conglomerate headquartered in Makurdi, with its operations and influence extending across various sectors and regions of Nigeria.

The success of the Tito Group stands as a powerful illustration of how innovation and perseverance can transform seemingly insignificant resources into substantial economic value. Akinkunmi’s story is a compelling narrative of turning waste into wealth, demonstrating the potential that lies within diligent effort and a forward-thinking mindset.

A Commitment to Philanthropy

Beyond his commercial achievements, Isaac Akinkunmi is widely recognized for his deep-seated commitment to philanthropy and community welfare. He has consistently demonstrated his concern for the less fortunate, particularly those affected by displacement and hardship. On numerous occasions, Akinkunmi has visited internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across Benue State, providing essential support and aid to families enduring difficult circumstances. These acts of generosity underscore his belief in giving back to society and contributing to the well-being of its members.

Looking Towards the Future

Akinkunmi expressed his profound gratitude to the Tor Tiv for this significant recognition of his contributions to the socio-economic development of Benue State. As a businessman originally from Ogbomoso in Oyo State, his embrace of Benue as his adopted home and his dedication to its progress have earned him immense respect. He reiterated his unwavering promise to continue playing an active role in fostering the growth and advancement of both Benue State and Nigeria as a whole. His journey, from the humble act of scavenging to leading a successful corporate group and receiving royal honours, serves as an enduring inspiration, proving that with determination and integrity, the most ambitious goals are attainable.
