Sophisticated Tunnel Allows Over 180 Migrants to Illegally Cross Polish-Belarusian Border

Polish Border Guard officers have uncovered an elaborate scheme involving a nearly 100-metre-long tunnel, through which over 180 foreigners illegally crossed the Polish-Belarusian border. The audacious operation, which saw migrants emerge into Polish territory via a subterranean passage dug beneath a dam near Narewka in the Podlasie region, was thwarted thanks to the swift response of border authorities.

The discovery highlights the evolving tactics employed by individuals seeking to circumvent border controls. The tunnel itself was a significant undertaking, measuring approximately 1.5 metres in height, allowing for passage by individuals. Its hidden entrance on the Belarusian side was strategically located about 50 metres from the border, with the exit emerging a mere 10 metres into Polish territory, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the terrain and border infrastructure.

Upon detecting the illegal crossing, integrated electronic systems employed by the Border Guard enabled officers to rapidly pinpoint the migrants’ emergence point. This technological advantage, coupled with the coordinated efforts of soldiers, police officers, and specially trained tracking dogs, led to the immediate apprehension of more than 130 individuals. A search for the remaining migrants is ongoing.

The majority of those apprehended were identified as nationals from Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the group also comprised individuals from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, indicating a diverse range of nationalities utilizing this clandestine route.

Smuggling Ring Suspected, Two Drivers Apprehended

In a parallel development, authorities detained two individuals suspected of facilitating the migrant smuggling operation. A 69-year-old Polish national and a 49-year-old Lithuanian man were arrested on suspicion of orchestrating the transport of the migrants towards Western Europe. Further investigations into their alleged involvement are currently underway.

This incident marks the fourth discovery of such a tunnel by officers of the Podlaskie Branch of the Border Guard this year alone. The repeated findings underscore a persistent challenge faced by border security agencies in the region.

The Border Guard has emphasized the critical role played by a combination of electronic surveillance and robust physical safeguards in their ability to swiftly counter these attempts to breach the state border. The effectiveness of these integrated systems was instrumental in the rapid response and subsequent detentions in this latest case. The ongoing investigations aim to dismantle the entire smuggling network responsible for this elaborate tunnel operation and prevent future attempts. The discovery serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which individuals will go to cross borders and the constant need for vigilance and advanced security measures.
