The Mysterious Donor Behind a $130 Million Military Salary Donation

A significant development has emerged in the ongoing government shutdown, with a substantial donation of $130 million made to ensure that U.S. military personnel continue to receive their salaries. This generous act was attributed to an anonymous donor who has now been identified as Timothy Mellon, an oil tycoon and heir to one of America’s wealthiest families.

The revelation came after President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged the contribution, describing the donor as a “great American citizen” and a “substantial man.” According to Trump, the individual reached out to offer support during the government shutdown, expressing a deep love for the military and the country. “He called us the other day and said, ‘I’d like to contribute any shortfall you have because of the Democrat shutdown. I’d like to contribute personally, because I love the military and I love the country,’” the president recalled.

Despite the magnitude of the donation, the donor preferred to remain anonymous, which is unusual given the typical expectations in political circles. Trump noted that the donor did not want any publicity, emphasizing the rarity of such discretion in the world of politics.

The Identity of the Donor

The mystery surrounding the donor was eventually unraveled by the New York Times, which revealed the identity of the billionaire. Timothy Mellon, 83, has remained largely out of the public eye but is part of a prominent family known for its immense wealth. Forbes estimates the family’s fortune at $14.1 billion, ranking them among the richest dynasties in the United States.

Mellon, however, has always been cautious about his financial status. He denied being a billionaire, stating that he “never have been, never will be.” His family history traces back to Thomas Mellon, an Irish immigrant who arrived in America in 1818 and built a legacy in real estate and banking. His grandfather, Andrew, became a venture capitalist and invested in companies that later became Alcoa and Gulf Oil.

Political Involvement and Controversies

While Mellon has generally avoided the spotlight, he has shown strong support for Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. His recent donation to the military has sparked discussions about how the funds can be utilized, as Congress typically needs to approve budget allocations.

According to Defense Department regulations, donations exceeding $10,000 must undergo an ethics review. Additionally, the donation may potentially violate the Antideficiency Act, which prohibits federal agencies from using funds in advance or in excess. However, the Pentagon has argued that the government can accept the money under the general gift acceptance authority.

Financial Contributions to Political Campaigns

Mellon has also been a significant political donor, particularly supporting Trump’s campaigns. According to the nonprofit research group Open Secrets, he contributed approximately $165 million to Trump’s last presidential campaign. His political spending increased significantly in 2024, compared to previous years.

His donations include:

  • A $50 million cash infusion to the super PAC Make America Great Again Inc.
  • Support for RFK Jr.’s presidential campaign and his group, Children’s Health Defense.
  • A small donation to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 2018 campaign, as revealed in a rare interview with Bloomberg in 2020.
