Court Adjourns Trial of Nnamdi Kanu for Medical Report

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to October 16. This decision came after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) failed to submit its medical examination report on Kanu’s health status as previously ordered by the court.

Justice James Omotosho made the ruling following a request from the Department of State Services (DSS) counsel, Suraj S’aad (SAN). He informed the court that the NMA had not yet completed and submitted the assessment of Kanu’s health condition. The DSS lawyer explained that the medical board had communicated that its report was still in progress.

Kanu is currently facing charges related to terrorism under the Federal Government’s prosecution. During the previous court session, Justice Omotosho directed the NMA President to form a medical panel to independently evaluate Kanu’s health condition. This was after both the prosecution and defense presented conflicting views on his medical status.

DSS counsel, Awomolo Adegboyega (SAN), argued that Kanu’s health could be managed within the agency’s medical facility. In contrast, defense counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), claimed that Kanu’s condition was worsening and urged the court to order his transfer to the National Hospital, Abuja, for proper treatment.

In response, the court mandated the NMA to conduct an impartial medical evaluation. This evaluation aimed to determine whether the DSS medical facility was adequate to meet Kanu’s health needs or if a transfer was necessary. Additionally, the report was expected to assess whether Kanu was fit to stand trial.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, the DSS counsel requested a one-week adjournment to allow the NMA medical board to complete its investigation. Since there were no objections from the defense, Justice Omotosho approved the request.

“The court is adjourned to October 16 for the report of the Nigerian Medical Association,” the judge ruled.

NMA Completes Medical Evaluation

Meanwhile, the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Ben Egbo, revealed in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH that the association had conducted the medical check and sent the report to the Attorney General of the Federation.

Egbo stated, “The court gave an order that we should do it. I think, within eight days, and immediately the Department of State Services wrote to us, we summoned a committee of seven doctors with one coordinator, making it eight.”

He further explained that the committee consisted of seven doctors from the seven geopolitical zones of Nigeria, each specializing in different fields such as Ophthalmology, Neurology, Urology, and Gastroenterology. These specialists examined Kanu and submitted their report to the NMA, which was then forwarded to the Attorney General of the Federation.
