Debre Birhan Sees Significant Industrial Growth, Creating Thousands of Jobs
Debre Birhan City, located in the Amhara Regional State, is experiencing a surge in industrial activity, with fourteen new factories commencing operations and creating over 36,000 employment opportunities. This significant development underscores the region’s commitment to economic expansion and job creation.
A high-level delegation from the Industrial Development Council has been actively touring these new facilities in Debre Birhan and its surrounding areas. The delegation comprises key figures instrumental in driving national industrial policy and economic growth. Among them are:
- Ambassador Girma Birru: Chairman of the National Manufacturing Industry Council, bringing extensive experience in fostering industrial development.
- Addisu Arega: Minister of Agriculture, highlighting the crucial link between agricultural resources and industrial processing.
- Melaku Alebel: Minister of Industry, directly overseeing the sector’s advancement.
- Aynalem Niguse: Minister of Revenue, providing insights into the fiscal implications and contributions of these new ventures.
- Debele Kabeta: Commissioner of the Customs Commission, ensuring smooth import and export processes for raw materials and finished goods.
Birhan Gebrehiwot, Head of Debre Birhan City’s Industry Investment Department, expressed optimism about the impact of these new enterprises. “These newly operational industries have created jobs for over 36,000 citizens,” he stated, emphasizing the direct benefit to the local population.
The city had set an ambitious target of eighteen new industries for the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year. While the full target was not met, the successful launch of fourteen industries represents a substantial achievement. These facilities are now actively engaged in production, contributing to the region’s economic output.
The council’s inspection tour is comprehensive, starting with visits to the Nixon Pulp Factory and the Baja Ceramic Factory, both located within the Bulga town administration. The itinerary is designed to provide a holistic view of the industrial landscape, with further visits planned to:
- Agro-industries, which are expected to leverage the region’s agricultural strengths.
- Car assembly plants, indicating diversification in manufacturing capabilities.
- Various other factories representing a broad spectrum of industrial activities.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to stimulate industrial growth across the Amhara region. Earlier in the week, Ambassador Girma Birru and other council members also conducted a similar inspection of industries in Bahir Dar City, further reinforcing the commitment to regional industrial development.
