Mavin Records: Crafting Global Stardom Through a Sophisticated Talent Development System

For over a decade, Michael Ajereh, widely known as Don Jazzy, has been meticulously building more than just a record label. Mavin Records, founded in 2012, has evolved into a formidable talent incubator, transforming from a traditional artist haven into a comprehensive engine for musical stardom. Don Jazzy, once primarily a beatmaker, has emerged as a visionary architect, orchestrating a system designed to not only discover but rigorously train and launch artists onto the global stage. He now describes Mavin as “a system that discovers, trains, and launches stars.”

This evolution reflects a keen understanding of the contemporary music landscape. In an increasingly saturated market, Don Jazzy recognized that raw talent alone is insufficient. His ambition shifted towards nurturing artists from their nascent stages, imbuing them with the distinctive “Mavin way” of performance and professionalism, and equipping them with the confidence and skills necessary for international acclaim. This elevated vision has coalesmented into what is now effectively the Mavin Academy.

A cornerstone of this successful model is the emphasis on cultural synergy and collaborative spirit. Don Jazzy stresses that prospective artists must not only possess musical prowess but also demonstrate an ability to integrate seamlessly into Mavin’s established creative ecosystem. “At Mavin, we also pay attention to how well they’ll fit into our culture,” he explained, highlighting the importance of shared values and a conducive working environment.

The fruits of this rigorous development process are evident in the careers of several prominent artists. Rema, who joined Mavin in 2019, exemplifies this trajectory. Initially a young talent nurtured within the label’s framework, he has since ascended to become one of Afrobeats’ most recognizable global ambassadors.

Ayra Starr’s journey mirrors this success story. Signed at the tender age of 18 in 2020, she too emerged from Mavin’s dedicated grooming program. Her rapid rise has seen her achieve significant global visibility and earn prestigious Grammy nominations, underscoring the effectiveness of the Mavin Academy’s approach.

Don Jazzy’s selection process extends beyond mere musical aptitude. In a candid conversation, he revealed his holistic evaluation of potential signees. “Beyond the music, I focus on the vessel, the person,” he stated. “I look at their personality, their hunger, their vision. You can’t always predict who will blow, but sometimes you can feel when someone truly wants it.” This focus on character and drive indicates a commitment to long-term artist development, rather than chasing fleeting trends.

The Mavin “furnace” has consistently produced a roster of accomplished artists, including Crayon, Ladipoe, Johnny Drille, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, and Lifesize Teddy. Unlike conventional record labels where artists might be left to navigate the industry largely independently, Mavin’s system prioritizes intensive mentorship. Don Jazzy has previously articulated the critical need for young talents to receive “guidance, room to grow, and a team that invests in their confidence.” His role, he emphasizes, is not merely to promote artists but to “help them build careers that outlive hype.”

The Mavin Academy’s continued vitality and its central role in the label’s future were recently underscored in November 2025 with the announcement of LOVN, the latest artist to join the Mavin roster. This unveiling, made via Don Jazzy’s X account, confirmed that the academy remains an active, structured, and integral component of Mavin Records’ ongoing mission to cultivate and launch the next generation of musical stars.
