Aduragbemi Akindunbi, a 25-year-old Civil Engineering graduate, has etched his name into the annals of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). His remarkable achievement of graduating as the overall best student with an unprecedented Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98 signifies not just personal triumph, but a new benchmark for academic excellence within the institution.
Akindunbi’s journey to this historic feat is a testament to unwavering dedication, strategic planning, and resilience in the face of adversity. His passion for the infrastructural aspects of Civil Engineering fueled his academic pursuits from the outset.
The Genesis of a Record
The thought of achieving such a high CGPA wasn’t a sudden revelation but a culmination of consistent effort that began in his first year. “My CGPA has been accumulating since the 100-level, and when I saw the final one, I was thrilled because it was something I had been working towards,” Akindunbi shared. “It was a result of the hard work, dedication, and consistent efforts that I put into it, so I was happy I could come out with that CGPA.”
This exceptional CGPA of 4.98 surpasses the previous record of 4.96, held by Johnbull Vitowanu, marking a significant advancement in FUTA’s academic history. While Akindunbi received an award for being the overall best graduating student, his record-breaking CGPA was a point of recognition during the convocation ceremony.
Influences and the Drive for Excellence
Akindunbi’s hunger for academic success was a lifelong companion, evident from his primary and secondary education. While not always the absolute top student, he consistently strived to be among the best. This mindset was crucial as he navigated his undergraduate years, especially after a year’s wait before gaining university admission.
A pivotal influence was his mentor, Michael Agwulonu, a senior colleague who offered invaluable guidance. Agwulonu, who was also a high-achiever with a four-point GPA, shared his experiences and insights, significantly shaping Akindunbi’s approach. “He told me a lot of things about the school because he liked me so much,” Akindunbi recalled. “I was happy to meet him because he was also on four points at that time, and he enlightened me a lot.”
This mentorship, coupled with Akindunbi’s own strategic thinking, led to an impressive 4.95 GP in his first semester of 100-level. This initial success served as a powerful motivator. “What came to my mind then was that if I could make 4.95 with the kind of energy I put into it, I could get something better if I were able to put more energy and strategy into it,” he explained. This led him to connect with like-minded peers, fostering a collaborative environment for academic growth.
Navigating Challenges: Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Akindunbi’s academic journey was far from smooth. He encountered numerous tough moments that tested his resolve. Financial difficulties were a significant hurdle, particularly before gaining admission. The need to support his siblings already in school meant he had to work for a year, delaying his university entry.
A chance encounter with a former student’s mother proved to be a turning point. When asked about his university plans, Akindunbi candidly shared his financial concerns. The woman’s generous offer to cover his admission and school fees provided the crucial support he needed. “She just told me to obtain the form, which I did. I wrote the exam and scored 283, even while I was working and doing a lot of things at that point in time,” he recounted.
Beyond financial strains, Akindunbi faced personal health challenges during critical exam periods. In his 300-level, he endured severe tooth pain while simultaneously writing exams, a period he described as “very difficult.” He found solace in his determination not to give up on himself, knowing that he had to persevere.
Another ordeal involved a severe skin infection that emerged during an exam period. Initially mistaken for chickenpox, the condition spread across his body. Akindunbi managed the situation by wearing concealing clothing for his exams, and thankfully, it subsided shortly after the first paper.
The theft of his iPhone, which contained invaluable content and editing materials, six days before his exams, was a significant mental blow. The subsequent malfunction of his Android phone compounded the crisis. He credits his friend, Labaika Adetunji, for his unwavering support during this stressful time, checking in on him despite also being occupied with exams.
The Impact of Scholarships and Setbacks
Akindunbi’s academic prowess also attracted significant financial aid through scholarships. He was a recipient of the MTN Foundation Scholarship, the Chevron Scholarship, and the SSB Scholarship from the Federal Government. These recognitions eased his financial burden and allowed him to pursue his passion for video editing, which he began learning in his 200-level.
While his academic trajectory was largely upward, Akindunbi experienced a moment of doubt in his 400-level. A ‘B’ grade in a course he had invested significant effort in came as a shock, impacting his CGPA and causing him to feel “down.” This setback, which dropped his CGPA from 4.99 to 4.97, taught him a valuable lesson about the unpredictability of life. “The takeaway from there for me was that in life, there are moments when things do not go as planned,” he reflected. “Sometimes, we might even do all the right things, and things still would not go as expected, so the energy to come back from those low moments is very important.”
Embracing the Role Model Status
Akindunbi’s popularity on campus extended beyond his academic achievements. He actively engaged in imparting knowledge to junior students and served in student leadership roles. This made the news of his grade drop in the 400-level particularly impactful, as it circulated widely and created significant pressure.
“The pressure was very high, and at that point, I felt uncomfortable,” he admitted. “I just had to soak in the pressure and told myself that the situation wasn’t about others, it was about me, and I knew what I wanted.” He channeled this pressure into renewed determination, achieving a perfect 5.0 in the subsequent semester, which boosted his CGPA back to 4.98. This experience underscored the importance of consistency and dedication.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Looking back, Akindunbi identifies consistency as the single most crucial decision that shaped his FUTA experience. His story has already begun to inspire aspiring students, with many reaching out for advice and expressing their desire to emulate his success.
“I believe this will actually set a lot of standards for a lot of people, and it will make people really and sincerely strive for success,” he stated with optimism. Aduragbemi Akindunbi’s achievement is more than just a high CGPA; it is a powerful narrative of perseverance, strategic thinking, and the enduring pursuit of excellence, leaving an indelible mark on the academic landscape.
