Emerging Travel Trends for 2026
As the world continues to evolve, so do our travel habits. From ‘workations’ and ‘babymoons’ to ‘coolcations’, the concept of holidays has always been dynamic. However, according to Skyscanner’s latest ‘2026 Travel Trends Report’, the future of travel is set to be even more unique and diverse.
The report, based on insights from 22,000 global travelers, highlights seven key trends that are expected to shape the way we travel in the coming year. These trends reflect a growing desire for personal expression and deeper connections with both places and people.
New Trends Taking the Spotlight
One of the most intriguing trends is ‘glowmads’, a beauty-focused movement where travelers engage in in-flight beauty routines and shop for local beauty products. This trend emphasizes self-care and the idea of enhancing one’s appearance while on the move.
Another notable trend is ‘shelf discovery’, which revolves around exploring authentic supermarkets while traveling abroad. This trend reflects an increasing interest in experiencing local culture through everyday activities like grocery shopping.
The ‘altitude shift’ trend is also gaining traction, as more travelers seek mountain breaks not just for skiing but for peace and serenity. According to the report, 71% of UK travelers are considering or planning a mountain escape for summer or autumn 2026.

Reading is also set to play a significant role in 2026, with the ‘bookbound’ travel trend taking off. This involves following in the footsteps of literary heroes or visiting top bookshops. It’s a way for travelers to immerse themselves in stories and literature while exploring new destinations.
‘Catching Flights and Feelings’ is another trend that focuses on solo travelers seeking friendships and relationships through travel. This highlights a shift towards more meaningful connections during journeys.
The other two key trends include ‘Family Miles’ (multigenerational travel) and ‘Destination Check-in’, where hotels, rather than locations, become the main attraction. The report reveals that 61% of Gen Z travelers choose their holiday destination based purely on the accommodation.

Rising Destinations and Price Drops
The report also analyzed the destinations that have seen the most increase in flight searches. Under-the-radar destinations are becoming increasingly popular for 2026. Salerno, the gateway to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, has experienced a 211% increase in flight searches between 2024 and 2025. The Western Pacific island of Koror, Palau, was the second most popular destination, with searches for scuba-divers’ paradise up 156% year on year.
Other top destinations include Kochi in Japan, Bilbao in Spain, and Rabat, Morocco.
On the flip side, the report also identified destinations with the biggest year-on-year drops in flight prices. Cologne in Germany took the top spot with a 44% price drop, closely followed by Goa, India (34% price drop) and Kauna, Lithuania (31% price drop).
A Personalized Approach to Travel
Bryan Batista, CEO of Skyscanner, commented: “Next year will see travelers choose destinations and build itineraries that feel less like an escape and more like an expression of self. The shift is clear: it’s not about getting away from real life – it’s about bringing who you are and what you love along for the ride.”
As we look ahead to 2026, it’s evident that travel is becoming more personalized and reflective of individual interests and values. Whether it’s through cultural adventures, book-inspired trips, or enriching activities, the future of travel promises to be more engaging and meaningful than ever before.
