Martin Kemp Shares Health Update After Chainsaw Accident
Martin Kemp, the 64-year-old former bassist of Spandau Ballet, has shared a health update following a “terrible” accident involving a chainsaw. The incident left his fingers bandaged and required immediate medical attention. His son, Roman Kemp, revealed details about the accident during an appearance on the You About podcast with Tom Grennan.
Roman shared that he first learned about the incident when his father sent a photo of his heavily bandaged hand via a family WhatsApp group. The message was brief: “Yep… chainsaw.” Roman then explained how the injury occurred, revealing that his father had been trying to cut down a branch using a chainsaw. “He said, ‘Oh there was a bit of the branch that we wanted chopping down so I went and got a chainsaw,’” Roman recalled.
The radio host expressed concern over his father’s decision to use a chainsaw at his age. “He’s 65. He’s got more than enough dough. Get a professional in, you can’t be doing that,” Roman said. Despite the incident, Martin has since recovered and reassured fans that the accident will not affect his upcoming gigs.
In a recent Instagram post, Martin addressed the situation directly. He flashed his bandaged fingers to the camera and said, “Hey guys, just a little message, you might have seen in a paper that I had a terrible accident with a chainsaw, which I did, but it was last week. I’m a lot better now.”
He also emphasized that his DJ gig would proceed as planned, adding, “I appreciate your concerns, and listen, it’s getting better by the minute, but I will explain how it happened another time. But just to reassure you, I am all right.”

Reflections on Mortality and End-of-Life Decisions
The incident comes after Martin Kemp has openly discussed his own mortality following significant health challenges, including two benign brain tumours. In 1995, he underwent surgery to remove the tumours, and during the two years leading up to the operation, he often feared he wouldn’t survive.
Speaking on his FFS! My Dad is Martin Kemp podcast, which he co-hosts with his son Roman, Martin shared his thoughts on end-of-life care. He expressed a preference for Roman to make decisions regarding his care rather than his older daughter, Harley. “You can block things out more easily,” he said. “It’s not whether you’re a man or a woman, it’s who you are as a personality.”
Martin reassured Roman that he would know when to make such a difficult decision. “When it comes to pulling the plug on someone… giving the doctor the wink and saying ‘that’s enough,’ you’ll know,” he said.

A Message to Fans
Martin’s update serves as a reminder of the importance of safety, especially when handling heavy machinery. While the incident could have been more severe, he is grateful for the recovery and the support from his fans.
His honesty and openness about his health issues highlight his resilience and commitment to living life to the fullest. As he continues to recover, fans remain hopeful for his future performances and continued presence in the entertainment industry.
