The Dilemma of Betrayal
A reader recently found himself in a difficult situation after discovering that his long-term partner had been unfaithful. This incident has left him questioning the future of their relationship and whether it’s worth salvaging or if it’s time to move on.
The reader has been in a live-in relationship with his girlfriend for nearly four years. She is close friends with his partner, and they have always described their friendship as “like sisters.” The friend often visits their home, and the reader has become accustomed to her presence. However, this dynamic changed when he returned home unexpectedly and caught his girlfriend in bed with her friend.
A Shocking Discovery
Last week, the reader was supposed to stay at his brother’s place for a few days but came home early when his brother canceled at the last minute. He called his girlfriend multiple times to inform her of his return, but she didn’t answer. When he entered the house, he heard what he could only describe as “sex noises” coming from their bedroom. Upon opening the door, he was shocked to find his girlfriend engaged in a sexual act with her friend.
The reactions of both women were one of guilt and shock. The friend tried to make a joke by asking if the reader would like to join in, which only made the situation more uncomfortable. The reader felt sick and immediately left the house, going to the pub to process what had just happened.
The Aftermath
After returning home, the reader ignored all of his girlfriend’s calls. Eventually, she reached out and begged for forgiveness, claiming it was a drunken one-off and insisting she isn’t gay. Despite her pleas, the reader is struggling with the idea that the person he thought he knew may not be who he believed.
He is torn between wanting to save their four-year relationship and the fear that his trust has been irreparably broken.
Expert Advice
No matter how much she protests that it was a one-off, the fact remains that you only found out about the betrayal because you caught her in the act. It’s hard to believe that she would have come forward otherwise. If not, then the claim of it being a “drunken one-off” cannot be trusted.
While she may still be exploring her sexuality, how she identifies is less important than the fact that she betrayed your trust. Your girlfriend needs to start being honest with you and herself about her attraction to women and how this fits into your relationship.
If you both decide to stay together, she may suggest non-monogamy. Think carefully about what you are comfortable with. If you wouldn’t share her with another man, then don’t agree to share her with a woman.
A good relationship counsellor could help both of you navigate this situation. Talking openly in a neutral setting can help you come to terms with what has happened and decide the best way forward. If you’re unsure whether trust can be rebuilt, then a breakup might be the right choice.
Breaking up won’t be easy, but it never is. Both of you deserve to be happy, and given that she has already broken your trust once, there’s no guarantee it won’t happen again.
Regardless of the outcome, remember that this is not a reflection of your worth or desirability as a partner.
