The Mysterious Disappearance of a Picasso Painting
A small but valuable painting by Pablo Picasso has gone missing during its transport from Madrid to Granada in Spain. The artwork, titled “Still Life With Guitar,” was expected to be part of an exhibition organized by the CajaGranada foundation. However, it never reached its destination.
The oil-on-canvas piece, created in 1919, is valued at 600,000 Euros and was loaned by a private collector in Madrid for the event. The exhibition opened last week, but the painting’s absence was only discovered on Monday, October 7. A van carrying the artworks arrived in Granada on Friday, October 3, but the foundation did not realize the painting was missing until several days later.
According to reports, the delivery was unloaded and checked, but some of the carefully packaged works lacked proper numbering, making it difficult to verify their contents thoroughly. This oversight may have contributed to the painting’s disappearance.
Spanish police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident, though they have not released any further details due to confidentiality rules. 
Possible Theories Behind the Theft
Spanish media have speculated that the van may have made an overnight stop near Granada, with the two individuals in the vehicle taking turns guarding the contents. This theory suggests that the theft could have occurred during this period.
Picasso’s works are often targeted due to their high value. In recent years, two of his paintings have sold for over $140 million at auctions. The artist’s legacy and the rarity of his pieces make them attractive targets for thieves.
One of the most famous cases involving Picasso’s art was the 1976 theft of over 100 of his paintings from the Palais des Papes museum in Avignon, southern France. Fortunately, all the stolen works were eventually recovered.
