Series Overview

Nepal faced a challenging start in the five-match series against Malaysia, which began on October 2. The visitors managed to win the toss only once, during the second match on October 4, when they chose to bowl first. However, the hosts consistently opted to bat first throughout the series.

Despite these challenges, Nepal demonstrated resilience and ultimately secured a victory in the final match of the series, defeating Malaysia by five wickets on Wednesday. This win marked a significant achievement for the Nepali team, showcasing their determination and strategic approach.

Key Moments in the Final Match

In the final game, Malaysia struggled to accumulate runs, managing only three runs in the last over. Kabita Kunwar played a crucial role in this outcome, taking three wickets in the last six deliveries. Her performance in the 20th over, which was her fourth over of the innings, proved decisive.

Rajmati Airee also contributed significantly by securing three wickets in three overs while conceding just 15 runs. Rachana Chaudhary added another wicket by dismissing opener Ainna Hamizah Hashim (15 off 19).

Malaysian captain Winifred Duraisingam was the highest scorer for her team, scoring 40 runs off 46 balls. However, this was not enough to secure a win for Malaysia.

Collective Efforts Lead to Victory

Nepal’s success in the series was driven by collective efforts rather than individual brilliance. While there were standout performances, the team’s ability to work together was key to their overall success.

Malaysia started the series strongly by winning the first match by three runs. However, Nepal quickly responded with a six-wicket win in the second match. The third match saw Malaysia make a comeback by defending a target of 121 runs, restricting Nepal to 107/8.

In the fourth match, Nepal successfully chased a target of 112 runs, thanks to skipper Indu Barma’s unbeaten innings of 48 off 39 balls. This performance made Barma the first woman cricketer from Nepal to cross the 1,000-run mark in T20Is.

The final match was a test of strength for both teams, with Nepal aiming to avenge their 3-2 series loss in 2023. They succeeded in doing so, delivering the same result to Malaysia.

Individual Achievements

Ainna Hamizah Hashim, the Malaysian opener, was the top run-scorer of the series. She scored 152 runs in five games, including two half-centuries with a highest score of 61.

Mas Elysa also had a notable performance, scoring a not-out 56 off 63 balls in the fourth match. Although Indu Barma fell short of reaching 50 in that same match, she finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the series with 117 runs.

Puja Mahato, the vice-captain of the Nepali side, was the only other batter to cross the 100-run mark in the series, scoring 101 runs with a highest score of 39.

Wicket-Taking Performances

Kabita Kunwar was the most successful bowler in the series, taking nine wickets in four matches. In the final match, she took three wickets, further solidifying her position as the top wicket-taker.

Nur Dania Syuhada, who played all five matches for Malaysia, followed closely with seven wickets. The list of wicket-takers also included three players—Nepal’s Somu Bist and Malaysia’s Aisya Eleesa and Hashim—with four wickets each in five matches.

Conclusion

Nepal’s victory in the series highlighted their strong team spirit and strategic depth. Despite challenges in the toss, the team’s ability to adapt and perform under pressure led them to a well-deserved win. The series also showcased several outstanding individual performances, contributing to an exciting and competitive contest between the two teams.
