Gary Neville has shared his updated thoughts on Ruben Amorim following the Manchester United manager’s recent success. After securing three consecutive wins, Amorim is starting to show signs of turning the tide for the club. Just weeks ago, the manager had to receive a vote of confidence from owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, indicating the pressure he was under. However, it seems that Amorim is now beginning to stabilize the situation at Old Trafford.
Neville, who had previously expressed concerns about Amorim, admitted that the Portuguese manager is showing improvement. He highlighted that the recent 4-2 victory over Brighton was crucial for the team. “The narrative coming into this game was that Manchester United couldn’t take a step back after what happened at Anfield last week and the win today was absolutely crucial,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “I think it has been Ruben Amorim’s best and most important week in the job. I think it gives him a bit of time.”
While Neville isn’t suggesting that Amorim is completely out of the woods, he acknowledged that the team is now performing well enough to be near the top of the league. This performance has certainly eased some of the pressure on the manager.
Amorim appeared downbeat after the 2-1 win over Liverpool, admitting that the victory meant little unless they could follow it up with another win at home. “A few weeks ago I was a little bit worried that the players didn’t believe in Ruben Amorim’s system,” Neville added. “That maybe there was an element of not winning matches and starting to question and listening to the noise that all of us – including myself – had added to that.”
However, Neville noted that there has been no doubt about Amorim’s popularity within the club. “One thing that’s been absolutely not in doubt when you speak to people around the club is that they really like him as a person, and that does count for a lot. Because I think there’s no doubt – he’s not lost the dressing room in terms of spirit and energy and how they feel towards him.”
He also pointed out that the players are eager to play for Amorim and are desperate to win. “I think they want to play for him, they’re desperate to win and I think you’ve seen that coming together in the last week.”
Neville emphasized the significance of the Anfield victory, calling it a big lift for the team. “Winning at Anfield in any season is special, but for Ruben Amorim to win at Anfield when it was so unexpected I think has given them such a big lift.”
Looking ahead, Neville mentioned the upcoming games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham. “We’ll look forward to the game next week against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham away the week after – there’s still a big job to do in the next month.”
He concluded by stating that the past month has been a period of reckoning for the team. “If it had started badly last week against Liverpool it could have gone a different way but it feels very different, it feels like the momentum is with them a little bit and the spirit is good.”
