Nigeria’s Record Gas Production Marks a New Era in Energy Transition

Port Harcourt — Nigeria is making significant strides toward a cleaner and more diversified energy future. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced a historic milestone, achieving a daily gas production of approximately 7 billion standard cubic feet (BCF). This marks the highest level of gas output ever recorded in the country’s history.

The announcement was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, during a briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Ojulari provided updates on the company’s performance and its ongoing investment initiatives.

“This is not just a number, it’s a statement,” Ojulari emphasized. “Our record gas output represents the fuel for Nigeria’s economic diversification and a critical foundation for achieving sustainable energy access.”

The achievement highlights Nigeria’s strategic shift from reliance on crude oil to a gas-driven economy. This transition supports power generation, industrialization, and the development of cleaner energy solutions.

Ojulari explained that this milestone aligns with the Federal Government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda. The initiative aims to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves for domestic use and to enhance export competitiveness.

Focus on Gas Infrastructure and Expansion

A key component of this ambition is NNPCL’s focus on developing gas infrastructure. This includes expanding pipeline networks and increasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity.

“We are deliberately investing in gas as both a transition and a transformational fuel,” Ojulari stated. “From the ANOH Gas Plant to NLNG Train 7, we are building assets that will power homes, industries, and the wider African market.”

The company is also committed to driving an inclusive energy transition that balances environmental responsibility with developmental goals. Ojulari highlighted that Nigeria’s gas journey is about energy justice—providing reliable and affordable energy to the people while meeting global sustainability targets.

Potential Impact on Energy and Economy

Energy experts believe that this record gas output could significantly boost electricity generation, supply industrial feedstock, and increase LNG exports. This could position Nigeria as one of the top-five global LNG suppliers by 2030.

Ojulari concluded by assuring that NNPCL will maintain its momentum through innovation, partnerships, and policy alignment with the Federal Government’s broader economic reform agenda.

Key Projects and Initiatives

  • ANOH Gas Plant: A major project aimed at enhancing gas processing capabilities.
  • NLNG Train 7: An expansion of the Nigeria LNG facility to increase export capacity.
  • Pipeline Network Expansion: Critical for transporting gas across the country and supporting industrial growth.

Future Outlook

With continued investment and strategic planning, Nigeria is well-positioned to leverage its natural gas resources for long-term economic growth. The success of these initiatives will depend on sustained collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners.

As Nigeria moves forward, the emphasis on gas as a clean and reliable energy source is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s energy landscape and contributing to global climate goals.
