The Return of Pastor Tony Evans
After a year-long absence, Pastor Tony Evans has made a return to his ministry at the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church in Dallas, Texas. At 75 years old, Evans shared that he “successfully completed this restoration journey” as he stepped back onto the church’s stage on Sunday. His return came after he resigned from the church in June 2024, though he never disclosed the nature of the “sin” he committed.
Evans received a warm welcome from the congregation, with a standing ovation marking his return. In a video posted by the church on YouTube, Evans reflected on the past year, describing it as an extremely challenging time. He expressed that being separated from his passion for preaching God’s word was difficult. “A lot of that was due to my own fault,” he said, adding that he had to go through a period of repentance and restoration for healing to occur.
Despite the emotional weight of his departure, Evans and the church did not provide specific details about the steps he took to repent for his unknown sin. The church clarified that Evans will not be leading the congregation anymore, with his son taking over as the new lead pastor.
A Public Acknowledgment of Fault
The church’s associate pastor, Wheel, stated that Evans publicly acknowledged falling short of God’s standards and the need to submit to the church’s discipline and restoration process. “We are pleased to report that Dr. Evans has fully submitted to the church’s discipline and restoration process,” Wheel added.
Evans, who previously served as a chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks, married Dr. Carla Crummie in 2023. He was previously married to Lois Evans for 49 years, who passed away in 2019.
In a written statement released to his congregation in June 2024, Evans explained that his decision to step down was part of a long-standing commitment to the Word of God as the supreme standard of truth. “When we fall short of that standard due to sin, we are required to repent and restore our relationship with God,” he wrote. He also mentioned that while he didn’t commit a crime, he admitted to not using “righteous judgment” in his actions.
The Church’s Statement on the Decision
The church shared a statement explaining that the decision to sideline its most popular preacher was made after extensive prayer and multiple meetings with Evans and the church elders. “Dr. Evans and the elders agree that when any elder or pastor falls short of the high standards of scripture, the elders are responsible for providing accountability and maintaining integrity in the church,” the statement continued.
Evans founded Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in 1976 as a small Bible study group for just 10 people. Over the years, the church has grown significantly, now boasting over 10,000 members and 100 different ministries targeting adults, youth, singles, and couples.
In addition to his work at the church, Evans hosted a popular daily radio show called “The Alternative,” which featured snippets of his energetic sermons. The show aired on over 1,400 stations across more than 130 countries.
