Elderly Woman Hospitalized After Swallowing Live Frogs for Back Pain

An 82-year-old Chinese woman has been hospitalized after swallowing eight live frogs in an attempt to alleviate her back pain. The elderly woman, known only by her surname Zhang, reportedly followed a local folklore that claimed consuming live frogs could help ease her herniated disc.

Zhang asked her family to catch the small amphibians, all of which were smaller than the palm of her hand, without revealing their purpose. On the first day, she consumed three of them, and on the next day, she swallowed five more. However, she soon experienced severe abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital, where she eventually disclosed the reason for her condition.

Doctors at a hospital in Hangzhou, eastern China, discovered that Zhang had developed a parasitic infection. One of the doctors explained: “Swallowing frogs has damaged the patient’s digestive system and resulted in some parasites being present in her body, including sparganum.”

This incident highlights the dangers of following unverified traditional remedies, especially when they involve consuming live animals. While some cultures may have long-standing beliefs about the healing properties of certain foods or practices, it is crucial to consult medical professionals before attempting such methods.

Unverified Claims About Hair Reversal Injections

This story comes just weeks after British medical experts raised doubts about a Chinese actress’s claims regarding injections that allegedly reverse greying hair. In a video posted on the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, actress Guo Tong, 37, shared that she had started a course of injections aimed at restoring her natural hair color.

In the video, Guo told her fans that her pigmentation issues were not genetic but linked to her stressful lifestyle. However, when questioned by the Daily Mail, top London-based experts emphasized that there is limited scientific evidence supporting these claims.

Dr Shirin Lakhani, an aesthetics doctor, stated: “It is thought to help re-pigmentation of the hairs by stimulating melanocyte activity in the hair follicles.” Dr Ed Robinson, a non-surgical cosmetic expert, added: “There is thought when exosomes are micro needled into the skin they might stimulate melanocyte stem cells to work harder. However, regarding treating grey hair, there is no solid, peer-reviewed clinical evidence that exosome treatments can reliably reverse generalised grey hair.”

He further noted that while there have been a few highly specific cases suggesting slight darkening of hair, these do not apply to broader grey hair reversal. Regulatory agencies remain skeptical about using exosomes for this purpose, and marketing such treatments as a cure for greying hair is considered misleading.

The Debate Over Hair Reversal Treatments

As beauty trends continue to evolve, many people are turning to innovative treatments that promise to reverse the signs of aging. But are these treatments backed by science, or are they simply adding fuel to the beauty industry’s hype machine?

One popular claim involves the use of cutting-edge serums that allegedly reverse grey hair. While some dermatologists suggest that these products may have potential, others argue that there is little evidence to support their effectiveness. This raises questions about whether these treatments are truly beneficial or if they are merely a marketing ploy.

Another topic of interest is whether it is possible to slow down the aging process without spending a fortune on expensive gadgets and treatments. Some individuals claim to have seen stunning results through natural methods, but the scientific community remains divided on the effectiveness of such approaches.

The debate also extends to celebrities who often share their personal beauty routines. For example, Gwyneth Paltrow has recently been in the spotlight for her hair loss remedy, with many wondering if it actually works. As more people seek out unconventional solutions, the line between science and myth continues to blur.

With so much information available, it is essential for consumers to approach these claims with caution and consult with medical professionals before trying any new treatments.
