Perlis Mufti Calls for Evidence Amidst Allegations of Project Irregularities
PETALING JAYA – Amidst a deepening political crisis in Perlis, a prominent religious figure has stressed the critical need for concrete evidence to substantiate any claims linking the state’s political turmoil to alleged breaches in project approvals. The Perlis Mufti, Datuk Seri Asri Zainul Abidin, has voiced his concerns that unsubstantiated allegations can foster damaging perceptions of key state institutions.
Datuk Seri Asri disclosed that he had personally discussed these allegations with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail. According to the Mufti, the Raja has encouraged individuals making such accusations to come forward with specific details regarding the projects in question.
“His Royal Highness did not point fingers at any specific individual,” Datuk Seri Asri explained. “However, allegations of this nature can create significant perceptions. For instance, it might suggest that the Menteri Besar resigned under pressure to approve certain matters without adhering to established regulations.”
He further elaborated on the potential ramifications, posing a rhetorical question: “Who would be in a position to exert such pressure on the Menteri Besar? This line of questioning can unfortunately give rise to very negative perceptions.”
Datuk Seri Asri was speaking on a podcast titled “Realiti Politik: Antara Agama dan Kuasa” (Political Reality: Between Religion and Power), produced by PromediaTajdid. He emphasized his neutrality in the matter, stating, “I am not defending anyone. However, if accusations are made, they must be supported by evidence.”
The Mufti expressed his profound concern, adding, “This is a matter of deep concern, and we do not want such claims to be invoked in the name of religion.”

Previously, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had commented on the situation during a press conference. Behind them, there are all sorts of things.”
Abdul Hadi Awang also alluded to the former Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azlan Man, stating that Shukri had refused to yield to pressure concerning specific development projects. These remarks from the Marang Member of Parliament emerged amidst escalating tensions within the Perikatan Nasional coalition, following the withdrawal of support for Shukri, who ultimately resigned from his post on Thursday, citing health reasons.
